Wonderful vintage rattan Campaign Style Ficks Reed Far Horizons Collection lounge or club chair designed by John Wisner. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. It has been professionally cleaned, re-stained, and oiled and one arm wrap has been redone. Although the cushions are nice, the quality of the upholstery job is not professional so you may want to recover. The brass caps have a purposeful patina. Please see photos and zoom in for details. Fabulous and Ficks Reed!! This is a WONDERFUL vintage lounge or club chair by John Wisner for Ficks Reed. Comprised of stout rattan with a gorgeous woven raffia back. It retains its original Ficks Reed tag and its warm and lovely finish which has aged to perfection. This chair is from Ficks Reed’s Far Horizons collection by John Wisner which was introduced in 1954. It is designed with sturdy crossbars under the seat, arm stretchers, and the front of the chair features double rattan bars. The rattan arm bars are held with rattan ties that extend from the front and back legs and wrap around the arm. A Super cool feature! And both ends of the arms are capped with brass tips with a purposeful patina. Rattan ties cover the top back seat corners and front corners of the seat base, and it looks FABULOUS! It features loose back and seat cushions wearing a lovely coral fabric PLUS, it’s very comfortable… in part due to the S springs that have been covered with a new whiter canvas deck covering. The design of this awesome Campaign style lounge chair is classic allowing it to work with many decor aesthetics and styles from traditional to mid-century modern. It will be wonderful in your living room across from your sofa, in your sitting room next to a lovely floor lamp, or in a family or game room. The Ficks Reed Furniture Company was originally established by Louis Ficks as the National Carriage and Reed Company in 1885. For over 125 years they built their reputation manufacturing high quality furniture using wicker, rattan, woven peel, bamboo, and selected hardwoods. They furnished both residential and commercial environments including prestigious hotels, clubs, restaurants, and resorts. They collaborated with world renowned designers including icons such as Paul Laszlo, John Wisner, Dorothy Draper, Paul T. Frankl, and others. Every piece of Ficks Reed furniture is hand worked to the highest quality which maintained their legacy as a leading manufacturer. Ficks Reed closed its manufacturing facilities in Cincinnati Ohio in 2011. John B. Wisner graduated from Parson’s School of Design, 1935. He was first employed as a designer at W & J Sloane, Dorothy Draper, Inc. Soon after, he established his own firm in 1952 and commissioned to design furniture for the Ficks Reed Company as well as serving his own clients. He was noted for his “Far Horizons Collection” for Ficks Reed which was introduced in 1954. Mr. Wisner passed away in 2007. Ficks Reed

Somewhat of an overlooked icon of American design, Ficks Reed was founded by Louis Ficks in 1885 as the National Carriage and Reed Company, a New York purveyor of wicker baby carriages. By the turn of the century, however, the company had moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and, under the auspices of Ficks Reed, began manufacturing furniture with wicker, rattan and bamboo.

Over the coming decades, Ficks Reed would benefit from an increased interest in Asian imports, as evidenced in everything from the growing popularity of chinoiserie wallpaper and Chinese porcelain to the Japanese influence in Frank Lloyd Wright’s modern architecture.

The brand was also bolstered by partnerships with several prominent architects and designers throughout the 20th century, including Paul László, Pipsan Saarinen Swanson — creator of the company's Sol-Air Group and elder sister of Eero Saarinen — John B. Wisner, Paul T. Frankl and Dorothy Draper.

Each Ficks Reed partner brought their unique sensibility to the designs — Swanson’s had skeletal frames while Draper, a largely forgotten decorator and pioneer of the Hollywood Regency style, favored more ornate detailing; László created low-slung seats — but all were rendered in the company’s signature wicker and bamboo.

Thanks in large part to the Draper relationship, Ficks Reed furniture has long been a fixture at The Greenbrier and Colony hotels, as well as other luxury properties including the Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton resorts and The Breakers in Palm Beach. In 2006, Draper protégé Carleton Varney continued his mentor’s legacy by debuting a new 20-piece collection for Ficks Reed based on her original designs.

A recent resurgence in the popularity of wicker and rattan has given way to newfound demand for Ficks Reed rattan chairs and other furniture in the secondary market, where original vintage pieces are often refinished, repainted or lacquered to further underscore the textural detail of their bamboo and rattan frames.
