About the Item

Guillerme et Chambron for Votre Maison, pair of 'Catherine' lounge chairs, fabric, oak, France, 1960s Designed by Guillerme et Chambron, these sculptural easy chairs exemplify the designers’ renowned craftsmanship in high-quality solid oak. The comfortable armchairs feature an appealing open construction, highlighted by evenly spaced spindles that form the backrest, one of the duo’s signature decorative elements. Meanwhile, the dynamically shaped legs enhance their sculptural appearance. The French designer duo Jacques Chambron (1914-2001) and Robert Guillerme (1913-1990) started their production postwar. Robert Guillerme studied design and architecture at the École Boule and graduated first in his class in 1934. Meanwhile, Jacques Chambron graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Reims. During the Second World War, the two met in a stalag, a Prussian prisoner camp, while being imprisoned by the Germans in East Prussia and started a great friendship based on their intense and deep passion for interior design. In 1948, Chambron resigned from his job as a painter and decorator on the Rue Nollet in Paris to move to Lille, in the North of France and join Guillerme. A year later, the two met cabinetmaker Émile Dariosecq, who was the owner of a workshop close by. It was during this meeting, that they decided to create their own company. They named it “Votre Maison”, meaning “Your Home”, which became the soul of the company. With this, they wanted to create pieces that focused on functionality combined with a beautiful design useful for daily life, by which they created a worldwide reputation. Most of the furniture designed by this duo shows a strong character and has a great expressive woodwork. The three of them divided their work equally. Overall, Guillerme worked as a designer, Chambron as a commercial, and Dariosecq’s workshop manufactured the pieces. Throughout their career, ‘Votre Maison’ produced over two thousand models, leaving a lasting mark in the world of design. Kindly be informed that the photographs provided are merely examples, as we had more of these chairs in stock. It is important to note that the chairs may vary in terms of wood grains. Additionally, the cushions shown in the images are not included. They can be custom-made according to the clients’ specifications. Please note that the current listed price excludes both fabric and labor costs. Reupholstery can be done before shipping by our experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration atelier. With high attention for the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts for further information about the endless possibilities our restoration and upholstery atelier has to offer. Of course, a locally organized reupholstery is possible as well.

Pair of Guillerme et Chambron "Edouard" Armchairs for Votre Maison, France 1960s
By Guillerme et Chambron, Votre Maison
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Edouard” lounge chair is often described as a “caquetoire”, or a conversation chair. This type of seating was an armchair style which emerged during the European Renaissance in France. As the name suggests, this type of chair was meant for sitting for elongated periods to chat. Generally, these chairs were also highly regarded for their aesthetic value as well, which can also be said about these exceptional chair models. The “Edouard” is a sculptural model with a blonde oak frame that is characteristic of the French designer duo. The design showcases the wide variety of shapes and forms of the solid oak frames, from the curving lines to the straighter spindles comprising the backrests. Naturally, a conversation chair needs to be first and foremost functional and comfortable, therefore the backs are slightly tilted, and the seat raised, aided by the generous seat and back cushions. The fuchsia-coloured upholstery beautifully complements the wood tone, and the small textured loops of fabric highlight the smoothness of the frames’ surface. The French caquetoire chairs...
