Lounge Chairs in Solid Hardwood, by Jean Gillon, Brazilian Mid-century Design

About the Item

Jean Gillon Mid-Century Lounge Chairs: A Masterpiece of Brazilian Modernist Design This pair of mid-century lounge chairs by Jean Gillon exemplifies the designer's unparalleled ability to blend robust materials with refined aesthetics. Crafted in the mid-20th century, these chairs epitomize the luxurious yet functional approach that defines Brazilian modernist design, for which Jean Gillon is renowned. Jean Gillon, a Brazilian designer of Romanian origin, moved to Brazil in the early 1950s. He swiftly became a prominent figure in the Brazilian design scene, celebrated for his use of rich hardwoods and his focus on creating furniture that is both beautiful and highly functional. Gillon’s designs often draw inspiration from Brazilian culture and materials, a characteristic clearly evident in this exquisite pair of lounge chairs. Constructed from solid hardwood, these lounge chairs showcase the rich, dark tones and intricate grain patterns that are hallmarks of luxurious material. The sturdy frames are characterized by their substantial, block-like construction, which provides a striking contrast to the plush, inviting cushions. Designed to offer maximum comfort, the generously padded seats and backs are upholstered in a soft, neutral beige fabric. This upholstery not only complements the dark wood but also adds a touch of understated elegance to the overall design. One of the standout features of these lounge chairs is the unique joinery and detailing. The frames are assembled using prominent, visible dowels and bolts, which not only secure the structure but also serve as decorative elements. This approach to joinery is a signature of Gillon’s work, reflecting a mid-century modernist emphasis on honesty in materials and construction techniques. A side view of the chairs reveals their thoughtful ergonomic design. The backrest is angled to provide optimal support, while the seat depth ensures a comfortable lounging experience. The wide armrests are perfectly positioned to offer support while enhancing the chairs’ robust visual appeal. These design elements highlight Gillon’s commitment to both form and function, ensuring that the chairs are as comfortable to sit in as they are beautiful to look at. In the context of mid-century modern Brazilian design, these lounge chairs by Jean Gillon are significant. During the mid-20th century, Brazilian designers were increasingly recognized for their ability to combine traditional craftsmanship with modernist principles. Gillon was at the forefront of this movement, creating pieces that were both innovative and deeply rooted in Brazilian aesthetics. These lounge chairs are perfect for a variety of interior settings, from contemporary living rooms to sophisticated offices. Their timeless design ensures they remain stylish and relevant, making them a valuable addition to any collection. Jean Gillon’s dedication to quality craftsmanship and innovative design is evident in every aspect of these chairs, making them a true testament to the enduring appeal of mid-century modern Brazilian design. This pair of mid-century lounge chairs by Jean Gillon is a magnificent example of the designer’s ability to create furniture that marries robust construction with refined aesthetics. These chairs are not just pieces of furniture; they are works of art that embody the luxurious yet functional approach of Brazilian modernist design. Their timeless elegance and exceptional craftsmanship ensure they will be cherished additions to any discerning collector’s array. Embrace the legacy of Jean Gillon and the rich heritage of Brazilian design with these exquisite lounge chairs.

  • Jorge Zalszupin's Presidential Lounge Chair, Brazilian Mid-Century Modern Design
    By Jorge Zalszupin
    Located in Sao Paulo, SP
The "Presidencial" lounge lounge armchair is a true icon of Brazilian modern design, created by the legendary Polish-Brazilian architect and designer Jorge Zalszupin in the 1960s. This rare and coveted piece showcases the fusion of two cultures, with its base made of tubular steel and black lacquered metal slats, topped with Brazilian Jacaranda Rosewood veneers in an unusual bentwood design. Zalszupin's innovative use of molded laminate wood allowed him to create the curves he desired, without the need for costly manual processes. This resulted in a beautifully unique armchair, part of a series composed of a sofa and armchair, that has become a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of Brazilian modern design. The lounge armchair's backrest is composed of profiled hardwood veneer slats, giving the piece a light and organic structure that elegantly accommodates voluminous cushions. Its "U" form seat rests on chrome-plated steel legs with tubular feet, while the armchair's rosewood-reinforced slat back adds a touch of elegance and sophistication. The Presidencial lounge chair is in very good vintage condition and has received new upholsteries in suede. Its sleek and modern design makes it a perfect addition to any space, whether in a home or office setting. While the armchair can be displayed without its original cushions, it also comes with a custom cushion for added comfort and style. Overall, the Presidencial armchair...
