"Vronka" Rosewood Midcentury Armchair by Brazilian Designer Sergio Rodrigues
Located in New York, NY
Designed in 1962 by Sergio Rodrigues, the “Vronka” armchair was made of solid Rosewood structure and a floating, comfortable cushion. Like many designers of Rodrigues's generation, he dreams of commercializing well-designed furniture produced in series. In 1962 “Meia-Pataca” factory-cum-store was launch. The idea was to expand distribution and reduce production costs. The industrial thought is visible on the structural solution, applying juxtaposed wooden pieces of a square or rectangular section and straight corners. Other pieces like the “Franco” sofa, the “Tonico” armchair...

Pair of Brazilian Modernist Rosewood & Leather Easy Chairs, circa 1970s
Located in Norwalk, CT
Generous proportions and luxurious finishes set this fabulous pair of Brazilian Modernist lounge chairs apart from the rest. The frames are crafted from gorgeous solid rosewood, with interesting sculptural chamfering at the legs. The tufted cushions are finished in beautiful caramel-colored leather and fastened by fringed straps which give just the right amount of Bohemian flair. Though these chairs are unsigned, they bear many similarities to contemporaneous designs by Percival Lafer, Sergio Rodrigues, and Jean Gillon. As one of the world's leading producers of rosewood, the nation of Brazil has long held close ties to the furniture industry. Yet, it was not until the second half of the 20th Century when the South American country - long known solely as an exporter of raw materials - became a design powerhouse in its own right. During this time, designers such as Percival Lafer and Sergio Rodrigues drew upon a unique shared cultural aesthetic and a rebellious spirit to create some of the coolest and most sought-after furniture of the Modern era. Brazilian Modernist furniture...

Vintage 'Mole' Rosewood Armchair with Ottoman by Sergio Rodrigues, 1957, Brazil
Located in New York, NY
Sergio Rodrigues created the "Mole'' concept between 1956 and 1957 at the photographer Otto Stupakoff's request, who wanted a two-seater sofa for his studio. The sofa should have cushions where the person throws the body as if attracted by the piece's comfort. The sofa gave rise to the famous and award-winning Mole armchair...

Mole Lounge Armchair, by Sergio Rodrigues in White Leather and Rosewood
Located in Houston, TX
The design originated with a 1957 commission for the photographer Otto Stupakoff, who asked Rodrigues for a "spread-out" sofa for his studio. The design sat in Rodrigues’ company Oca showroom window on the Praca General Osorio in Ipanema for years without many commissions or local interest until the chair was prized and subsequently manufactured in Italy for European consumption. It has become an icon of Brazilian modern design internationally due to winning first prize in the IV Concorso Internazionale del Mobile in Cantu, Italy in 1961, where Arne Jacobsen proclaimed it as communicating the unique characteristics of Brazilian culture. The structure of jacaranda is typical of Brazilian furniture since the colonial period, but the low-set, thick and sturdy quality gave it an authentically Brazilian character. The leather straps and buckles that form the sling under-structure are associated with the gaucho culture of the pampas in the southernmost region of the country. The overstuffed and tufted brown leather cushions suggest a relaxed and easy-going vibe, the attitude of the Cariocas, inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sergio Rodrigues believes that one of the reasons why the chair was awarded was because it was considered one of the first postmodern pieces of furniture. "There was a Brazilian accent. It was a piece that easily revealed where it had been made. It could only have come from a place where there was a lot of wood and leather. And there was a certain informality in the design," said Sergio in February 2006. This Mole lounge chair...

Sergio Rodrigues 'Gio' Chairs in Rosewood and Edelman Shearling, 1960s Brazil
Located in Los Angeles, CA
If you are looking for the most unique and coveted rare pair of large scale armchairs for you or your client, look no further, this pair of Sergio Rodrigues 'Gio' three-position adjustable lounge chairs are the best examples of this rare and coveted design you can find, and we will explain why below. First, this pair was sourced in Rio Brazil and exported to the U.S. where we recently restored them. We took a photo of the chairs in Brazil prior to shipping, then took more photos of them with the original fabric in our showroom prior to reupholstery. The unique attribute on this pair of 'Gio' club chairs are the removable Rosewood pegs which allow the chair to adjust up or down in three different seating positions to customize the amount of recline to make these chairs the perfect and more comfortable relaxation tool you can imagine. Secondly, the Gio design is incredibly rare - much more common is the Vronka design which is similar but fixed and not adjustable. Of Sergio's designs, the 'Gio' design is one of the most sought after by collectors and art collectors - and having a pair that was sourced in Brazil with beautiful visible age, demonstrating its authenticity and beauty. Third, as you can see in the photos, we restored these in incredible fashion - with luxurious and very expensive Edelman Shearling. We kept the hides in their natural shapes and upholstered the chairs as such giving it an organic and natural pattern. It took 22 shearling hides to complete these two large scale chairs, the cost of the hides and reupholstery was over $5,000 however the results are the most unique and special 'Gio' chairs you will ever find. Last but not least, the frames were fabricated from Brazilian Jacaranda (Rosewood) with incredibly beautiful deep Rosewood grain - Brazilian Rosewood is an endangered species so furniture can no longer be produced with it making it more valuable and special, especially for collectors and investors in art and design. The signature look of the Gio lounge chairs are the finial (peg) inserts that hold the adjustable seats in position; which are also in Jacaranda Rosewood. On the seat frames are three Rosewood receptacles on each side which the pegs insert into. Incredible details, exquisite craftsmanship and design, and luxurious materials all in this pair of Sergio Rodrigues Gio chairs...

Sergio Rodrigues 'Tonico' Jacaranda, Leather and Alpaca Armchairs, 1960s Brazil
Located in Los Angeles, CA
If you are looking for the most unique and coveted rare pair of armchairs for you or your client, look no further, this pair of Sergio Rodrigues 'Tonico' lounge chairs are the best examples you can find, and we will explain why below. First, this pair was produced under supervision by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil - but - exclusively for the US market, distributed for a very short time by Brazilian Interiors in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the gallery of this listing is a photo of the Brazilian Interiors catalogue that displays this model and confirms production was supervised by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil. The unique attribute on this pair of 'Tonico' lounge chairs is the addition of paddle arms whereas normal production of the Tonico design was without armrests. This addition adds greater comfort to these already incredibly comfortable chairs. Secondly, 'Tonico' lounge chairs, loveseats and sofas are already incredibly rare - this pair with paddle arms are even more exceptionally rare and special. Of Sergio's designs, the 'Tonico' line is the most sought after by collectors and art collectors - this pair possesses greater rarity and also have the additional value of provenance which makes them much more valuable and desirable for collectors over the typical Tonico chairs...

Vintage 'Mole' Rosewood Armchair with Ottoman by Sergio Rodrigues, 1957, Brazil
Located in New York, NY
Sergio Rodrigues signature piece designed in 1957, the "Mole" Armchair – which means "soft" in Portuguese – is composed of a solid rounded Rosewood frame, adjustable leather support straps, and floppy, oversized luxurious leather cushions. Although it was not well received initially, Mole would soon become an icon, perhaps the most well-known piece of Brazilian design. In addition, its forms allow the user to shape the body anatomically when sitting in comfort. However, these characteristics do not define this piece itself but a key project of national design. Robust and extremely comfortable, the Mole sparked an international design trend...
