Designed in the 1960s by Sergio Rodrigues (1927-2014), these Meia Pataca armchairs are made of a solid Rosewood structure and comfortable loose cushions in black leather. Like many designers of Rodrigues' generation, he dreamed of commercializing well-designed furniture produced in series. In 1962 Meia-Pataca factory-cum-store was launched. Sergio Rodrigues created the "Mole'' concept between 1956 and 1957 at the photographer Otto Stupakoff's request, who wanted a two-seater sofa for his studio. The design originated with a 1957 commission for the photographer Otto Stupakoff, who asked Rodrigues for a "spread-out" sofa for his studio. The design sat in Rodrigues’ company Oca showroom window on the Praca General Osorio in Ipanema for years without many commissions or local interest until the chair was prized and subsequently manufactured in Italy for European consumption. It has become an icon of Brazilian modern design internationally due to winning first prize in the IV Concorso Internazionale del Mobile in Cantu, Italy in 1961, where Arne Jacobsen proclaimed it as communicating the unique characteristics of Brazilian culture. The structure of jacaranda is typical of Brazilian furniture since the colonial period, but the low-set, thick and sturdy quality gave it an authentically Brazilian character. The leather straps and buckles that form the sling under-structure are associated with the gaucho culture of the pampas in the southernmost region of the country. The overstuffed and tufted brown leather cushions suggest a relaxed and easy-going vibe, the attitude of the Cariocas, inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sergio Rodrigues believes that one of the reasons why the chair was awarded was because it was considered one of the first postmodern pieces of furniture. "There was a Brazilian accent. It was a piece that easily revealed where it had been made. It could only have come from a place where there was a lot of wood and leather. The unique attribute on this pair of 'Gio' club chairs are the removable Rosewood pegs which allow the chair to adjust up or down in three different seating positions to customize the amount of recline to make these chairs the perfect and more comfortable relaxation tool you can imagine. Third, as you can see in the photos, we restored these in incredible fashion - with luxurious and very expensive Edelman Shearling. We kept the hides in their natural shapes and upholstered the chairs as such giving it an organic and natural pattern. It took 22 shearling hides to complete these two large scale chairs, the cost of the hides and reupholstery was over $5,000 however the results are the most unique and special 'Gio' chairs you will ever find. Last but not least, the frames were fabricated from Brazilian Jacaranda (Rosewood) with incredibly beautiful deep Rosewood grain - Brazilian Rosewood is an endangered species so furniture can no longer be produced with it making it more valuable and special, especially for collectors and investors in art and design. The signature look of the Gio lounge chairs are the finial (peg) inserts that hold the adjustable seats in position; which are also in Jacaranda Rosewood. On the seat frames are three Rosewood receptacles on each side which the pegs insert into.
