About the Item

Very rare pair of lounge chairs designed by Bengt Ruda. produced by Nordiska Kompaniet during the early 1950s. Dark grey lacquered four pod steel base and organic spring and foam seats. Reupholstered with Krakorum bouclé fabric from Dedar. Very good vintage condition. Some minor wear to the paint of the lower part of the legs. Upholstery is new. Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) holds a remarkable history as not only a renowned department store but also a trailblazer in the world of interior production. In 1903, NK made a bold decision to create its own line of furniture, driven by the belief that the prevailing designs of the time did not align with the distinctive style that NK epitomized. This marked a turning point for the company as it ventured into the realm of furniture manufacturing. One of the hallmarks of NK's furniture production was its collaboration with prominent architects and designers of the era. Esteemed figures such as Carl Malmsten, Gunnar Asplund, Axel Einar Hjorth, Elias Svedberg, Lena Larsson, and Bengt Ruda lent their talents to create exquisite designs for NK's furniture line. The lighting fixtures, too, boasted distinguished creators, including Erik Tidstrand and Bertil Brisborg, the latter serving as the chief architect at NK's lighting department for over three decades. Notably, Brisborg's luminaires for NK's furniture concept Triva in the mid-1940s exemplify his remarkable contributions. NK's workshops were adept at producing both custom-made and mass-produced furniture. In the 1920s, their craftsmanship adorned numerous public spaces, including the Stockholm Concert House and the Swedish Match Company. As time progressed, public decoration became an integral part of the workshops' production, further solidifying their reputation as purveyors of exquisite and sophisticated furnishings.
