A Pair of Petite Mid-Century Socialist Lounge Chairs

About the Item

This pair of Mid-Century Lounge Chairs features barrel backs, round seats and large swiveling casters. Hungarian design in the post-war period was very functional and modern, closely following Western European trends. Many pieces were Brutalist in inspiration, eschewing traditional forms in favor of Socialist Modernism. These chairs were stylish and contemporary, probably made for Party officials or other privileged individuals. These pieces highlight a mostly forgotten part of European history. The chairs were re-upholstered in purple mohair.

    Located in Chicago, IL
These compact mid-century lounge chairs feature an integrated arms, a comfortably-curved back and solid hardwood legs with brass sabots. They are of Czech origin and date to the Communist era. During that time, modern design mostly copied from Western European, particularly Italian, models. High communist party officials, intellectuals and others in elite circles were free to travel and purchase limited quantities of luxury goods. They had a taste for the new styles and wanted to model progressive values in design and culture. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, socialist furnishings lost prestige and were temporarily forgotten. Today they are sought after for their design and for their unique historical value. Brutalist architecture in the former Eastern Block...
