A Pair of Art Deco Lounge Chairs by Maison Dominique

About the Item

These chairs by Andre Domin and Marcel Genevriere for Maison Dominique are exquisite examples of mid-century design, dating back to the late 1940s. Their sleek lines and sophisticated craftsmanship epitomize the era's aesthetic. The rosewood veneer, having been refinished, retains its original allure while any necessary restoration work ensures their integrity and longevity. The recent re-upholstery in a light blue velvet adds a contemporary touch, elevating their elegance. Moreover, the decision to retain the original down material for the cushions not only preserves their authenticity but also provides luxurious comfort. For those preferring firmer seating, the option to fill the cushions with foam offers flexibility without compromising on style or comfort. Overall, these chairs are a testament to timeless design, blending vintage charm with modern refinement, making them a striking addition to any interior space.

These compact mid-century lounge chairs feature an integrated arms, a comfortably-curved back and solid hardwood legs with brass sabots. They are of Czech origin and date to the Communist era. During that time, modern design mostly copied from Western European, particularly Italian, models. High communist party officials, intellectuals and others in elite circles were free to travel and purchase limited quantities of luxury goods. They had a taste for the new styles and wanted to model progressive values in design and culture. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, socialist furnishings lost prestige and were temporarily forgotten. Today they are sought after for their design and for their unique historical value. Brutalist architecture in the former Eastern Block...
