Pair of Vintage Art Deco Lounge Chairs with Walnut Arms

About the Item

These refined armchairs are based on a vintage Central European Art Deco design found in Hungary, Germany and Czechoslovakia. The voluminous seats provide ample cushioning that contrasts with the slenderness and polish of the walnut-veneered arms. Hungarian furniture makers mastered the art of making veneered furniture as early as the Biedermeier Period (early 1800s). They thrived through the interwar period, perfecting streamlined Art Deco designs, which mostly originated in France. The frame has been strengthened, the stuffing replaced and the arms re-coated with traditional French polish. The upholstery has been replaced with chenille. The buyer has the option of choosing their own upholstery for an additional charge.

    Located in Chicago, IL
These compact mid-century lounge chairs feature an integrated arms, a comfortably-curved back and solid hardwood legs with brass sabots. They are of Czech origin and date to the Communist era. During that time, modern design mostly copied from Western European, particularly Italian, models. High communist party officials, intellectuals and others in elite circles were free to travel and purchase limited quantities of luxury goods. They had a taste for the new styles and wanted to model progressive values in design and culture. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, socialist furnishings lost prestige and were temporarily forgotten. Today they are sought after for their design and for their unique historical value. Brutalist architecture in the former Eastern Block...
