Rare pair of 'double shell' lounge chairs designed in 1960 by Danish designer Illum Wikkelsø for Italian manufacturer Arflex.  The October 1962 issue of 'DOMUS' confirms that the 'double shell' lounge made its debut in 1960. Please see image 2. This upholstery on this pair has just been fully reupholstered by our in house restoration team with respect for the original materials including the use of new high quality, expensive and hard to find today, original specification Latex foam. The chairs have been reupholstered in high quality 'De Ploeg' wool fabric finished with an elegant edge detail in black cord piping. A rare example of Illum Wikkelsø's work outside of Denmark, again displaying his mastery of natural, high-quality materials ,an elegantly understated design Classic. PLEASE SEE IMAGE 2 (confirms production date of 1960) Original ARFLEX manufacturer's catalog, 1962 Biography:- One of the great Danish designers Illum Wikkelsø (1919-1999), remains one of Denmark's best kept secrets. He attended The School of Arts & Crafts in Copenhagen, before joining the workshop of fine cabinet maker Jacob Kjaer. His designs were manufactured by a host of the top Danish manufacturers, including C.F. Christensen, N. Eilersen, Holger Christiansen, Komfort/Dansk Form, Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik anf Hjørring Møbelfabrik.0
