About the Item

This rare set of three rattan lounge chairs was designed by John Hutton (1947-2006) in 1995 for Donghia’s distinguished Merbau Coastal Collection. As Donghia’s Design Director from 1978 to 1998, Hutton played a pivotal role in defining the brand’s understated, globally inspired elegance. These chairs exemplify his vision — combining organic texture, relaxed luxury, and timeless form. Crafted from finely woven rattan over solid Merbau wood frames, the chairs feature broad, low-slung silhouettes with softly reclined backs and substantial armrests. The Merbau hardwood, prized for its density and rich, reddish-brown tone, brings both visual warmth and structural integrity, making these pieces as durable as they are inviting. The Merbau Coastal Collection reflects Hutton’s signature style: an elevated take on tropical modernism, where natural materials meet architectural clarity. Designed with versatility in mind, these lounge chairs transition seamlessly between indoor and covered outdoor spaces, adding texture and quiet sophistication. Seldom seen as a complete set, these chairs offer a unique opportunity to acquire an iconic, collectible design by one of the most influential American furniture designers of the late 20th century. Ideal for design collectors and lovers of refined coastal aesthetics. . All cane veneer is intact and complete. The chairs have all been newly upholstered in Knoll "Journey" Mushroom stain resistant fabric and are stamped Donghia on the underside of the frames. The arm height is 24.5 inches. The three chairs are in very good original condition showing very minor signs of normal use.
