Two Pair Steelcase Space Age Lounge Chairs by William Andrus

$11,500per set

About

Four lounge chairs, sold as pairs, designed by William Clifford Andrus and produced by Steelcase in 1972 for the Soft Seating Group. Seat width 19”. Seat depth 22”. These won the top design award for institutional furniture and innovative use of materials in 1972. “We wanted the contrast between had and soft" said Bill Andrus. Their clean cut design covey the feeling of mass floating in space. Almond color fiberglass with brown leather cushions and trim on a transparent acrylic base. An interplay between form and material, this group is the result of Steelcase’s efforts to create pieces that would float rather than be anchored in an environment. The shells of the Soft Seating Group are formed by the same spray process used for boat hulls. A mold is sprayed with Gelcoat, the basis for the smooth outer shell. Then a mixture of fiber glass and resin is sprayed into the mold. Before it hardens, pieces of rigid urethane foam are pressed in at points of stress and more fiber glass resin mixture is sprayed around them, bonding them with the shell. When the shell is removed from the mold, the surface is sanded smooth and handsprayed first with a primer and then with a catalyzed urethane paint for a hard, smooth finish.

About the Manufacturer

Steelcase

The Michigan-based furniture maker Steelcase has a long and distinguished history, but collectors focus on its works from the 1950s to the ’70s, when, along with such companies as Knoll and Herman Miller, the firm helped define the aesthetics of American mid-century modernism.

Steelcase was founded in Grand Rapids in 1912 as the Metal Office Furniture Company, promoting steel desks and other furnishings as safer, fireproof alternatives to wooden pieces at a time when smoking in the workplace was common. Boston’s first skyscraper — the 32-story Customs House—was furnished by the company in 1915. Frank Lloyd Wright turned to the firm in 1937 to fabricate the enameled metal chairs and desks for his Johnson Wax Headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin.

In the 1950s, when Steelcase formally adopted the name it still uses today, the company developed a sleek and functional style employing rectilinear chrome frames for glass-topped tables and upholstered seating pieces. The look is similar to that of the minimal, Bauhaus-inspired designs of Florence Knoll. By the 1970s, Steelcase had enlivened its styling, offering such pieces as chairs and side tables, designed by Gardner Leaver, with circular bases and curving supports. As you will see on these pages, Steelcase designs offer a perfect foundation for a modernist decor, with a touch of flair.
