About the Item

Handsome Mid-Century Modern rolling, swivel, and tilt office desk fiberglass shell armchairby Burke Inc. with a royal blue seat cushion and wood veneered steel shaft. It has the big Burke B and the number 116 embossed on the bottom along with Burke Inc. and Dallas, Texas. It is in fabulous vintage condition and ready to use, circa 1960s. Wow! If you are looking for Mid-Century Modern rolling desk chair for your home office. You found it. And, it swivels and tilts too. Made circa 1960s by Burke Inc. Comprised of a white fiberglass armed shell mounted on a single walnut veneered metal shaft with a four-pronged aluminum base and ball casters. Plus, its original royal blue hopsack fabric seat cushion. Both the chair and the cushion are in incredible original condition. Burke modeled their fiberglass chairs after Saarinen’s tulip chair and Eames fiberglass shell chairs as a more affordable option for the masses. But they made them with changes and enhancements that have made them become collectable in their own right. Kind of a second cousin of sorts with lots of style and sass. This example in ready for you to use. We know you love it. Make it yours. Steelcase was founded as the Metal Office Furniture Company in 1912 by Peter M. Wege in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Metal Office Furniture Company's first products included fireproof metal safes and four-drawer filing cabinets which Wege invented and manufactured for the Macey Company. In 1914, the company received its first product patent for "The Victor," a fireproof steel wastebasket. The Victor gained popularity due to its light weight achieved through a patented process of bending flat steel at right angles to create boxes, and its ability to prevent fires at a time when smoking was common indoors, particularly in the workplace. In 1915, the company began manufacturing and distributing steel desks and in 1937, the company collaborated with Frank Lloyd Wright on office furniture.
