Large Pine Wood Rocking Chairs, The Netherlands 1970s

About the Item

These rocking chairs, born from the era's penchant for Brutalist design, manage to strike an intriguing balance between the rugged and the refined. The 1970s marked a distinctive period in design, and the Brutalist movement, characterized by its raw, unapologetic use of materials, left an indelible mark on furniture. These rocking chairs embody the spirit of Brutalism, boasting a robust pine wood construction that convey a sense of strength and durability. Yet, in a departure from the harsh edges often associated with Brutalist design, these chairs surprise with soft, flowing lines that gently cradle the sitter. Pine wood, the choice of material for these pieces, brings its own set of advantages: renowned for its resilience, pine became a canvas for many 20th century designers to showcase the marriage of strength and grace. The natural grain of the wood, visible through a subtle finish, adds depth to the chairs, embracing the imperfections that come with time, like a visual memoir of shared moments. The essence of these rocking chairs lies not just in their design, but also in the experience they offer. Rocking chairs, with their rhythmic motion, invite contemplation and relaxation. They transform a simple seat into a haven, a place to unwind and reflect. The designer clearly understood the timeless allure of a rocking chair, choosing to augment the utilitarian aspect of seating with an inherent connection to human comfort. The upholstered seats and back cushions provide great comfort, and also a gentle contrast to the starkness of the pine wood. These cushions, rather than diminishing the Brutalist appearance, accentuate it. Softness meets strength, and the result is a tactile experience that harmonizes the senses. The light, textural upholstery, carefully selected for its texture and neutrality, introduces a touch of luxury without compromising the chair's integrity. These rocking chairs stand as visual illustrations of the era's exploration of contradictions. They are both bold and welcoming, robust and refined. This pair of rocking chairs’ design, pairing of materials, and their quality make them truly special accent pieces. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. • Scandinavian Brutalist Oak rocking Chair, Scandinavia 1970s

While they play a prominent role in both architecture and pop culture, rocking chairs solidified their place in Scandinavian design history as well. As this model proves, functionality can manifest in many forms, but it is always accompanied by expert craftsmanship and a great aesthetic quality. The Brutalist style of design - the term derives from the French word brut, meaning “raw” – is characterized by a deliberate plainness and crudity, and emerged in the mid-20th century and gained popularity in the late 1950s and 1960s. In furniture and décor, the Brutalist movement was somber, giving importance to eerie organic and rugged shapes in earthy tones. The defining characteristics of Brutalist furniture design...

  • AB Åby Möbelfabrik Pine Rocking Chair, Sweden 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
While they play a prominent role in both architecture and pop culture, rocking chairs solidified their place in Scandinavian design history as well. As this Swedish model proves, functionality can manifest in many forms, but it is always accompanied by both great material and aesthetic quality in Swedish design. Taking influence from the golden age of modernism in Sweden and the 1930s’ cabin furniture, this rocking chair was made in the famous “sportstugemöbel” style, originally intended for Swedish summer houses. Solid pine was the preferred material in this specific style and some of the most prominent Swedish designers created models for these summer residencies, including Axel Einar Hjorth and Carl Malmsten. Functionality and longevity were the guiding principles for the style, and accordingly, for this rocking chair as well. The pine structure is very polished and firm, assembled with an expert joinery technique. The seat is ergonomically carved, and the edges are gently rounded for maximum comfort. Åby furniture...
