Pair of Culbuto Chairs by Marc Held for Knoll

About the Item

Marc Held is a French Architect, Designer, and Photographer known for his functional furniture developed in the 1960s. During a visit of the Fritz Hansen factory in Denmark, Held stumbled on employees working on an unassembled Egg chair by Arne Jacobsen. Seeing the Egg chair rock from side to side gave him so much satisfaction that he decided to come up with a chair that could rock and pivot without the need for mechanical articulation. The first prototype of the chair was sculpted from a solid block of balsa. 5 Prototypes of the Culbuto chair were presented in 1967 in Paris and they were an immediate hit; This allowed Held to sign a contract with Knoll, and three years later in 1970 The Culbuto chair finally got its big launch, but sadly didn’t get the commercial success it deserved.
