ROCKING ARMCHAIR in solid teak for indoor-outdoor Mid-20th Century
About the Item
The Rocking chair is based on a Mid-20th century design by John Stuart for Widdocomb as a replacement for those purchased by the customer’s grandparents in the 1950s. It is designed to work as an outdoor, or indoor chair, so the joinery and materials were strengthened appropriately. Other improvements over the original include widening the chair for a more spacious fit and upgrading the cloth web base with contoured and sturdy teak slats.
The overall design departs from typically blocky outdoor furniture. The added benefit of working from an existing piece was being able to fine tune both the design and the ergonomics so the armrests, backrest and base support hours of comfortable sitting.

Darmanin Furniture is designed and hand-crafted in East Hampton Springs, New York. We provide custom and semi-custom furniture for residential and commercial clients who are interested in sculptural pieces that can live and function in their spaces. Our approach to furniture design shares with traditional Japanese makers a respect for the materials, joinery and structural components as an integral and visible part of the finished piece. We combine this with our own aesthetic and graphic-design background to create furniture unique to the studio that displays striking geometry, visual balance and composition. We specialize in natural materials, using solid hard-woods, shoji paper, danish cord, vegetable tanned leather and oil finishes. We favor American grown lumber such as white oak, black walnut, white ash, maple and cherry. Our portfolio of designs include: Armchairs, bed frames, benches, cabinets, coffee tables, desks, dining chairs, dining tables, lamps, mirrors, side tables and stools.
