This is a huge, iconic “Charles” 3-Section L-Shape Sofa (consisting of a CH228S, a CH156S and a CH156D section) from the “Maxalto” range of seating from the world renown Italian furniture house of B&B Italia. In a world of temporary pleasures, B&B Italia create beautiful furniture that remains a joy forever. Dressed in a most-gorgeous and tactile striped-wool fabric in a myriad of neutral tones which, whilst being as robust and hard-wearing as rhino skin, its softness and texture is simply divine to the touch. Supplied with numerous complimenting back cushions. This piece is in superb, beautifully-maintained condition, having seen light, regular use in the past. Its handsome order reflects the TLC and considerate use afforded it at its previous home but, to be clear, is far from perfect. It possesses a number of light, superficial but noticeable marks to this light-coloured cloth (as you might expect), and has a small area of wear to the wool on the back of one of the units (which would be visible if this piece was to be used where it can be viewed all-around) but, past that, is as carefully-maintained and well-presented as you could possibly hope to find. Please view the images provided to confirm its exceptional condition and beguiling appearance. Despite its imperfections, it remains an entirely-original and achingly-elegant example of this seating icon with many, many years of distinguished service ahead of it. In its current condition, it is clearly far from perfect but would still meet the requirements of all but the most-particular and, for someone looking for a piece of high-design to position at the heart of family life, it is truly heaven sent! This superb piece possesses all the beauty and majesty of the finest contemporary furniture money can buy. Dimensions-wise, when configured as pictured as an L-Shape, it measures 312cm across the back, is 328cm deep and stands 73cm high but, obviously, can be configured differently to create whatever configuration you require. As you will recognise, it can be either a right or left-side sofa depending on where you employ it, so is as flexible as it is beautiful. Due to the sectional nature of this piece, rest assured that it dismantles easily into its 3 component sections, so is able to be transported, installed and rebuilt without issue. The breathtaking seating position this iconic modern-design creates is enhanced by the use of sumptuously comfortable, generously upholstered feather-filled back and composite seat cushioning, which leaves you powerless to resist its charms. Not only does it possess an aesthetic to die for, but it is sooooooooooooooooooooooooo comfortable too!

In 1966, Piero Ambrogio Busnelli cofounded C&B Italia, a modern Italian furniture manufacturer, with Cesare Cassina in northern Milan. From the outset, Busnelli and Cassina set about recruiting the most talented modernists in Italy to conceive of creative furnishings manufactured in modern ways. In the early 1970s, the company split, with Cassina founding his own eponymous firm and Busnelli taking leadership of what became B&B Italia.

For decades, Busnelli cultivated relationships with the world’s best design talent, resulting in furniture pieces that remain iconic today — be they Gaetano Pesce’s outwardly curvaceous Up seating (made for C&B, reintroduced by B&B) or tables from industrial designer Paolo Piva, each more sophisticated than the next in their geometrically complex steel-tube bases. B&B Italia earned four prestigious Compasso d’Oro design awards: in 1979 for Mario Bellini’s Le Bambole, in 1984 for the Sisamo wardrobe system by Studio Kairos, in 1987 for Antonio Citterio’s modular Sity sofa and, in 1989, the first award given to a manufacturing company itself.

Other notable names who designed for B&B Italia over the course of its 54-year history include Patricia Urquiola, Naoto Fukasawa, Zaha Hadid, Ettore Sottsass and Vincent Van Duysen, to name a very few. And while these names bring star power to the B&B brand, in many cases, it was B&B Italia who helped usher in their celebrity, fostering a wave of design talent on the world stage.

The company’s forward-thinking vision manifested in its own headquarters, too: In 1972, B&B Italia tapped architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers to design a steel-framed, postmodern-style home for the brand, whose crisscrossing metal exoskeleton is reminiscent of the pair’s Centre Pompidou in Paris, which was built at roughly the same time. Now, B&B Italia manages a contract division and outdoor section as well as its residential arm, and it also controls production for Maxalto, a brand spun out with furniture designs by Antonio Citterio.
