Mid-Century Modern Sectional Sofas

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by celebrated manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

Generations turn over, and mid-century modern remains arguably the most popular style going. As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

Large Mid-Century Modern Sectional with Chaise and Walnut Frame
Located in Greenwich, CT
About This Piece This customizable sectional sofa features a modern solid walnut frame with two solid walnut panels on the return ends, tight seat and back cushions and blind tuft detail along the outside back. Walnut can be replaced with oak, mahogany or wenge. Our upholstered frames are built with real hardwoods and glue-and-dowel joinery, never plywood or pine. The frames are made to outlast the fabric and foam for future reupholstery. Upholstery is done with eight-way hand-tied springs and cushions are made of high density medium firmness foam wrapped in down/feather casements. Loose cushions are made with zipper for easy laundering. How We Work Made to order by Connecticut-based furniture design and manufacturing company The Tailored Home. Submit your customization desires by 1stdibs messenger for a quote. After orders are placed our workshop manager creates a visual work order for your approval for quality reasons. Customization Options The lengths of the sofa pieces are fully customizable. Height and depth are inherent to the design and are partially customizable. Ask for details. The fabric shown comes in more colors, just ask. We also carry thousands of other materials and can send you samples and fabric pricing upon request. We accept your fabric for a COM fee of 5% of the cost of the piece. Exposed wood can be lacquered in any Benjamin Moore color (for additional charge) or stained in one of our stain options. Custom color matches cost $75 per sample. Welting, piping, tape or trim can be added. We accept inspiration photos of pieces you like. 7-Piece John Wisner for Ficks Reed Far Horizons Rattan Modular Sofa Group
Located in Chattanooga, TN
A tasteful fusion of modern, Eastern and boho-chic style. Luxurious bamboo living room set by John B. Wisner for Ficks Reed. Wisner’s “Far Horizons” collection was first introduced in 1954 and remains a desirable, timeless classic. Inspired by the tropical lands of the the East, these modular bamboo lounge chairs with end table are featured in the hard-to-find dark walnut tone. The color is so deep that it almost appears ebonized. Curved and straight lines of rattan intersect to create this trademark pagoda style. The original straps have been replaced with all new supports. Professionally reupholstered with new, textured tweed fabric. The woven threads are a calming blend of teal, green and yellow tones. Tastefully tailored with button tufting and boxed stitched cushions. Along with new foam cushions, our restoration team spent countless hours on the revitalizing the bamboo on all 7 pieces. We maintained the original tone and mitigated nearly every flaw in the finish. Not to be overlooked, the square coffee / end tables offer plenty of function along with the form. The the light-tan tabletops, with a very subtle parchment pattern, not only look like new, but they're practically indestructible. Ideal for hosting parties, these end tables can combine to make one large coffee table...
