19th Century French Louis XIV Whitewashed Canape with Rams' Heads

About the Item

19th Century French Louis XIV Whitewashed Canape with Rams' Heads was sculpted from select French walnut, and features a timeless neoclassical design that dates back to the glory of ancient Greece and Rome. Unusual raised inverse corbels adorn the seatback cornerposts topped with lions' heads, with a stunningly carved stretcher connecting the legs below for added strength and longevity. The apron is a work of art unto itself, with angels' heads, fabric and laurel swags, suspended acanthus scrolls and rosettes atop the urn-form fluted legs. What is most striking, however, are the rams' heads on the ends of the armrests, sculpted to an incredible degree of lifelike artistry! Recently upholstered in a pleasing neutral fabric with double piping, even on the back side making it ideal for placement anywhere in the room! Circa 1870s Measures 44.5H x 61W x 25.5D; seat 18H
