About the Item

A precise and highly accomplished work of art, this well preserved French Louis XV period canapé was crafted during the middle of the 18th Century. It has been lovingly conserved in the last century, clearly by a craftsman with a passion for restoring with utmost attention to detail and originality - he precisely carved a new facade for 2/3 of the rear apron and exactly replicated a single back leg to ensure this piece could be enjoyed for generations to come. The skill exhibited in the carvings along the crest rail are of highest quality, with raised floral motives flanking the complex and truly magnificent display of roses that are deeply carved at the apex of the crest. Similar depictions are carved along the apron with a thin molding flowing from the apron through the legs. Covering the seat and back is an early hand stitched needlepoint aubusson upholstery with Eastern scenes of a most vivid garden with four figures. It is just gorgeous, the mellow needlepoint actually preserved in quite good overall condition despite the significant tearing and holes - the majority of the covering remains in very sturdy and fine condition, such that the task of restoration in the future will require only minimal imagination. For the serious collector of the finest in French furnishings and decor, this is an uncompromising work of art. Precious and in exceptional condition, this is an investment grade piece that you will cherish in your collection for a lifetime. Measurements: 75" W x 29 1/2" D x 40 1/2" H; 17" H to seat Condition Report: Hand stitched needlepoint upholstery is early but almost certainly not original; the covering is has obvious holes and tears throughout, though the majority of it remains in quite good condition. We would certainly not recommend changing it. Frame has extensive inactive pest damage, due to which 2/3 of the apron along the back has been restored: while preserving the original framing beneath, a conservator has apparently custom carved walnut to face out the core along 2/3 of the apron; probably around the same time time the blocking underneath was replaced, the middle-right back leg replaced and the middle-left back leg restored with a splice repair. Other notes include a loss to the toe of the middle-right front foot, a patch along the apron of the leftmost front leg (where leg joins frame), and many replaced pegs and other minor repairs. A sturdy and comfortable piece, though the back should be supported by being placed against the wall for regular use.
