Rococo Revival Antique Carved Walnut Settee Sofa in Louis XV Taste, 19th Century

About the Item

This is a beautifully carved settee in the Louis XV taste, though the influences of the Rococo Revival period are clearly at work throughout the motifs and form. A period that expressed a longing for the flourish and excess of the late 18th Century, morphed as craftsmen and design catered to the taste of a growing middle class over that of the ruling class, there is a defined independence of the prior century in the carvings and shaping of the settee. The crest is particularly impressive, the large display of swirling acanthus and foliage flanking three flowers that spring from a spiraled vase as large flowers sprawl outward along the crest rail. The floral upholstery is a heavy grade and remains in good condition without any observed flaws, this flanked by two open arms with anthemion carved handholds over curvy acanthus carved arm supports. The legs are equally impressive, each with a sharp cabriole to terminate in bold scrolling French toes. Crafted of solid walnut, this is a piece that was built to last the test of time, the quality of hand craftsmanship throughout evident in the sharp and precise carvings. This is a piece that if well cared for will continue to be a cherished part of fine interiors for several lifetimes. Measurements: 29" D x 67 1/2" W x 41 1/8" H; 17" H to seat Condition Report: Old and probably original surface in quite excellent condition with only minor wear. Very sturdy and strong with only minor joint separations. Mid left front leg has a crack by the joint, still remaining very sturdy and not causing any difficulty. Upholstery is in "good" condition with no noteworthy flaws.
