American 18th Century Queen Anne - Chippendale Transitional Maple Side Chair

About the Item

American Queen Anne-Chippendale transitional side chair in maple with rush seat, boldly turned front stretcher and front legs and a classic Chippendale back. This chair takes elements from the late 17th century and early 18th century and melds them with the new Chippendale design of the mid 18th century forming a transitional chair. Country makers sometimes had conservative clients who liked the elements of an earlier era but were willing to try something new as well. Chairs such as this one bridged the gap between old and new. The legs are turned as one would see in the late 17th century and the stretchers are round, but the back has the modern influence of the new Chippendale design with cupid bow shaped top rail, ears and pierced central splat, hence a nod to the old while embracing some of the new. Had this been a pure Chippendale design, the legs would have not been turned but would have been straight. This sturdy maple chair is of New England origin. Circa 1760. 19 1/2" w x 15" d x 39 1/2"h
