Elegant 18th Century Hepplewhite Side Chair in Mahogany, English circa 1785

About

This is a very elegant, fine quality Side Chair from the late 18th Century, circa 1785. Shield Back chairs of this date are popularly called Hepplewhite because very many chair makers followed the designs of George Hepplewhite, as illustrated in his Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide, published in 1788. This chair has a beautifully balanced and flowing, crisply carved back splat, based around the Prince of Wales plumes. The legs are braced by dovetailed stretchers and the seat is a drop in type which has been newly re-upholstered. The chair is made from mahogany and has a very good naturally patinated colour.
