About the Item

A stunning and rare pair of Dutch Art Deco Amsterdam School chairs dating from c. 1925, beautifully crafted in solid oak with upholstered black seats. Each chair features a hand-carved scarab beetle on the backrest - a clear nod to the Egyptomania that swept through Europe following Howard Carter’s discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. The scarab, a symbol of rebirth and protection in ancient Egyptian culture, is rendered here in a striking black finish, contrasting elegantly with the warm tone of the oak. The design blends the geometric and expressive craftsmanship typical of the Amsterdam School with the exotic mystique of Egyptian revival design that captivated artists and architects of the era. These chairs stand as both functional furniture and historical artworks, embodying the international artistic dialogue of the 1920s - where modernist form met ancient symbolism. The Scarabs are not glued on but either carved in or recessed in the wood (there is no seperation visible in between the wood of the backrest and the scarab) Amsterdam School furniture is known to have some strange, even bizarre features, but other than the earlier Egyptian inspired designs by H.P. Berlage, Egyptian themes are very rarely seen in Dutch Art Deco. Therefore very rare and they make great conversation pieces.
