Take a walk on the wild side, or maybe just have a seat there with scepter in hand. Each chair has been recovered in high-quality, cruelty free, faux-fur that very much resembles the look and feel of leopard fur. Adorned top to bottom with hand-carved intricate detail. These highly collectible and hard to find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture.
This project was a complete tear-down and rebuild. Every section was unbolted and individually restored. This sinuous, dark cedar has been painstakingly detailed by our in-house restoration team to both preserve the patina and address any imperfections in the wood. Lightly recolored and clear-coated to accentuate and preserve the character. The seats and backs were professionally reupholstered, and the results speak for themselves. We're more than certain these will exceed expectations.
Robert Post Junior and Artist William Westenhaver Created Witco in 1959. The two capitalized on the exotica trend by creating lavishly bold, roughly carved wood furniture and decor. The delightfully dramatic furniture was so beloved during the period that Elvis created an entire “Jungle Room” in his Graceland home featuring Witco furniture! Witco remains a mainstay among collectors today. You can even see original Witco pieces still in use at Graceland, and other iconic tiki venues like Polynesian Gardens, the Hawaiian Inn, and the Aku Tiki Inn all located in Florida.

About the Designer and Chair Model:
From the early 1950s, Panton had dreamt of making a stackable, cantilevered chair all in one piece. In 1956, he designed the S chair which can be considered a forerunner of the Panton chair. He saw it as an item of furniture in which the back, seat and legs were made of the same material and in one continuous piece. It was first produced in 1965.
Panton made a series of sketches and design drawings for the Panton chair in the 1950s. In 1960, he created his first model, a plaster-cast, in collaboration with Dansk Akrylteknik. In the mid-1960s, he met Willi Fehlbaum, who, unlike many other producers, was fascinated with the drawings of his legless chair in plastic rather than wood, the favoured material of the times. Working closely with Fehlbaum, Panton produced a cold-pressed model using polyester strengthened with fibreglass. For the first time, an entire chair had been designed in one piece, without any legs. It became known as a free-swinger. The first rather heavy model, which required substantial finishing work, was subsequently improved and adapted to industrial production using thermoplastic polystyrene which led to a marked reduction in cost.
In 1968, Fehlbaum, from Vitra, initiated serial production of the final version which was sold by the Herman Miller Furniture Company. It was varnished in seven colors.
In 1979, however, production was halted as it became apparent that the material polystyrene was not sufficiently durable. Four years later, the model was again produced as the Panton chair Classic, this time in the rather more expensive material. Finally, in 1999, Vitra used...

This chair was part of the collection he designed for Saridis of Athens in 1961, inspired by the drawings he saw on ancient Greek vases. The Klismos chairs features a graceful curving back and sable curved legs. The woven seat is made of leather straps / thongs which are tight around the walnut frame. The design beholds Robsjohn-Gibbings’ philosophy of furniture design that is independent of time.

Based on ancient Greek models, which had been widely copied in the 18th and 19th century, Robsjohn-Gibbings’s version made the klismos shape famous again in the 20th century. Obsessed with its elegant lines, he designed versions of the chair throughout his career, but the most recent examples have been made by Saridis in Athens since the early 1960s, when the designer met the company’s owners and settled in the Greek capital.
