4 Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Mr10 Dining Chairs 1960s Knoll International

About the Item

Complete set of four chrome cantilever MR10 chairs by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in brown leather. This set of chairs is an early 1960s example of his famous design produced by Knoll International. The MR10 chair was first designed in the 1920s, and this set of four features the chrome springs on the backs and seats. Later the design was improved, with a shortening of the springs and a reversion to an elastic corset cord. The chairs still bear the oval sticker marks on the back of the bottom of the seats. MR10 chairs are really comfortable, and are a real design Classic, as seen in many films and other media. Our MR10 chairs recently have been used to decorate the interior of a restaurant in London, which was featured in Architectural Digest, Dezeen, Elle Decoration, and many other publications (as shown in the images, which are property of Child Studio). These four, as you can see from the images, are missing some springs, and the leather punctured holes are ripped off. All of the cantilever frames are, however, in great condition, with the expected 80 years of wear. Due to the historical value of these chairs we decided not to touch them and offer them as is in their original condition which is reflected in the price of the set. If you wish to restore them with new leather, in any colour, please let us know and we can assist you. Please note these chairs are available either as the complete set of 4, or two pairs of two. Sol Garson Signed Sculptural Chair 1970s Art Hand Carved Wood Sculpture Mandela
Located in London, GB
A unique museum piece with historical and political value especially for the latest BLM movement. This artwork by Sol Garson is a sculptural stained hand-carved wood chair, representing a prisoner and the struggles of Nelson Mandela as well as black people during during the apartheid. Inspired by the struggles of Nelson Mandela, the chair is masterfully sculpted with intentionally chiselled effect surface and lacquered with a smooth patina touch, a caged back and base, in which lies a spherical sculpted ball with three faces. The round seat is upholstered with an embossed faux leather. It is signed at the bottom "Sol Garson 74”. The chair, despite its artistic leanings, is also very comfortable and stable. It can be easily placed on any interior space as it's very discreet and muted on colour. Born 1923, Garson was a glassworker for much of his life based in Manchester. One of his most famous works is the wooden sculpture of Nelson Mandela, which was placed in Manchester Town Hall’s main entrance area in 1986, to be later given to Nelson Mandela himself where it still resides today in Mandela's estate. Sol Garson also produced a memorial to the International Brigades...

A set of 6 MR10 chairs, Mies van der Rohe
By Thonet, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Located in London, GB
A pair of 6 MR10 dining chairs designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1926 and manufactured by Thonet during the 1970s. Mies van der Rohe was issued the patent for his tubular steel cantilevered design in August, 1927. This was closely followed by another patent for the addition of wicker to the seat and back, which was issued in August, 1928. Sergius Ruegenberg, who worked in Mies van der Rohe’s office from 1925 to 1934, recalled the design process which led to the creation of the MR10. According to Ruegenberg, Mies began with a simple sketch of a cantilevered chair by Mart Stam, who was hailed as the first to design a chair without back legs. Mart Stam’s original design was a simple construction of lines and joints, it was a chair of right angles. Mies drew a single sweeping curve over the joints of Stam’s cantilevered chair to produce the foundation of what would become the MR10 and other associated designs in tubular steel. The MR10 was showcased at several notable events during 1927, which included the Exposition de la Mode in Paris and the Weissenhof Exhibition in Stuttgart. The latter was an exhibition of 21 buildings curated by Mies in order to promote modernist design and the, albeit idealistic, solutions it sought to create or working-class housing. The M10 chairs were originally produced by Joseph Müller...
