  • Antique Regency Satinwood Récamier Chase Lounge Sofa Fainting Couch Daybed
    Located in Dayton, OH
"A rare and impressive Regency period Récamier sofa or fainting couch, circa 1820s. Exquisite and vibrant Satinwood sleigh form featuring a scroll crest rail, rolled and flared arms. Upholstered in an elegant blue French brocade. Supported by curvilinear scrolled legs with block feet. Acquired from a 1980s auction after a heated bidding exchange with Ralph Lauren. The modern chaise longue was first popularised during the 16th century in France. They were created by French furniture craftsmen for the rich to rest without the need to retire to the bedroom. It was during the Rococo period that the chaise longue became the symbol of social status and only the rarest and most expensive materials were used in their construction. Today, the chaise longue is seen as a luxury item for the modern home. They are often used to complement a home's décor such as living or reading rooms, or as a stylish boudoir chair for bedroom seating. Duchesse brisée (Broken duchess in French): this word is used when the chaise longue is divided in two parts: the chair and a long footstool, or two chairs with a stool in between them. The origin of the name is unknown. Récamier: a récamier has two raised ends, and nothing on the long sides. It is sometimes associated with French Empire (neo-classical) style. It is named after French society hostess Madame Récamier (1777–1849), who posed elegantly on a couch of this kind for a portrait, painted in 1800 by Jacques-Louis David. The shape of the récamier is similar to a traditional lit bateau...

  • Alberto Rosselli Saporiti Italia Post Modern Confidential Lounge Sofa Couch MCM
    By Alberto Rosselli Saporiti
    Located in Dayton, OH
"Iconic Fratelli Saporiti Italian Confidental lounge, library or club sofa / couch by Alberto Rosselli, circa 1970s. One of the first modular club chairs with a puzzle like cushion connection creating a pivotal look. Provenance : Jerome Schottenstein Estate, Columbus Ohio. Jerome was was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist, co-founder of Schottenstein Stores Corp. The Schottenstein family were Lithuanian immigrants who began an extensive business empire in the late 19th Century. Schottenstein Stores owns stakes in DSW and American Signature Furniture; American Eagle Outfitters, retail liquidator SB360 Capital Partners, over 50 shopping centers, and 5 factories producing its shoes and furniture. It also holds an ownership interest in American Eagle Outfitters, Wehmeyer in Germany, Cold Stone Creamery and The Mazel Company. Since 1950, Saporiti Italia produces some of the most sophisticated and advanced pieces of furniture of the history of Italian design. There is a leit motiv in all the company's creations: each new piece is history in itself. Catching time off balance and anticipating the future are both the challenge and the vocation of Saporiti Italia. Each item created and constructed by the company is slightly ahead of its time and it is destined to last, both in form and function, until the next era. The company, founded in 1950 by Mr. Sergio Saporiti and still under control of the Saporiti family, has contributed to the creation of milestones in the history of Italian design. During these decades of fast growing economy and fast changing social environment, Saporiti Italia set its particular international and avant-garde style. The first pieces of furniture of the Saporiti of the times were clearly influenced by emerging Scandinavian design, but with a special touch of Italian elegance in the use of finishing and materials. In 1965 Sergio Saporiti started a fruitful and “scientific” collaboration with one of the masters of Italian architecture and design of all times: Alberto Rosselli. Together they created a series of pieces of furniture – the Jumbo chair...
