About the Item
The works, installations and room concepts created by atelier oï never cease to amaze. The unusual designs provide a sense of the key areas that the design col- lective has worked on over several decades: materials, form and light. The collective’s way of working resembles that of a top- class chef, who uses experimental methods with exactly the right touch. The designers succeeded in developing their very own de- sign language, which is nourished by a love of authentic materials and artisan skills.
When it came to developing the DS-808 for de Sede, this sensitive approach –
with its focus on fully understanding the material – proved to be extremely valuable. While working with leather in a practical way, the designers found a way to push
the boundaries of the material in a playful manner – and to clearly place the unmis- takable hallmarks of classic leather design in the here and now. The leather is laid over the structure like a throw. The end of each square pouffe forms a dynamic wave, which makes the heavy material appear fluid and light.
The convex and concave lines allow in- finite, sinuous seating arrangements to be created in a modular way – side tables, too, are at home within the softly undulating structure. With or without backrests, in a group or as a solo performer, the DS-808 and its dynamic topography create a wave of delight in any setting.
An unusual and effective dynamic
is created when traditional leather craftsmanship and a playful, expe- rimental approach to design come together. Sweeping wave-like forms characterise the DS-808, designed by atelier oï, which makes the furni- ture particularly appealing and ex- pressive. Its sinuous form pushes the boundaries of materials design and is created by placing the leather onto a curved structure like a throw, which creates a sophisticated interplay of light and shadow.
The flowing design of the furniture creates an especially original and authentic look – allowing it to express itself in a unique, autonomous and refreshingly different way.

A de Sede piece lends a strong personality to the room it occupies. One of the world’s most respected furniture design houses, de Sede’s quality Swiss craftsmanship has its foundation in a long history of making expertly designed saddles. Founded in 1965 to build on a successful family-run saddler’s workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland, de Sede now is a leading manufacturer of leather goods and furniture, including sofas, chairs and beds.
At the core of de Sede’s philosophy is a reverence for the complexity and beauty of handcrafted furniture in an age when mass-produced objects are the norm. Over the years, the atelier has built a name for itself in its modular furniture pieces, which are made using the highest quality leather upholstery. The sleek, elegant pieces incorporate functionality with beauty. Amongst their best-selling designs is the DS-600 introduced in 1972. Also known as the Non Stop sofa, it is a sensually curved, snaking modular sofa whose individual pieces can be zipped together to create multiple variations and arcs.
De Sede has collaborated with some of the world's finest design minds, enhancing the prestige and individuality of their products. Designers like Santiago Calatrava, Antonella Scarpitta, Stephan Hürlemann, Gordon Guillaumier and Philippe Malouin have all created pieces with the atelier. Ubald Klug’s 1974 DS-1025, also known as the Terrazza sofa, is an enduring favorite with its cascading levels of leather. In 2017, de Sede expanded its product line to include high-quality leather handbags, which are as thoughtfully designed and beautifully crafted as its furniture. De Sede AG is now part of the Volare Group AG and continues to handcraft its fine furniture and other goods from its factory in Klingnau.
