De Sede "DS-88" Patchwork Modular Sofa, 1970, Set of 3

About the Item

De Sede "DS-88" patchwork modular sofa, Leather, Switzerland, 1970, set of three. The De Sede “DS-88” modular sofa, designed in 1970, embodies the Swiss brand's commitment to excellence in craftsmanship and material selection. This piece features a meticulous patchwork of hand-stitched black leather, with the vertical patterning on the cylindrical backrest transitioning into a horizontal patchwork on the square seat cushions. The interplay of subtle tonal variations across the surfaces adds an elegant sense of movement and fluidity, while the modular design allows for flexible configuration in contemporary spaces. The seating is characterized by generous square cushions adorned with capitonné, contributing to both a sense of great comfort and durability. The backrest, rounded and cube-like, extends seamlessly as a continuous form, further emphasizing the design’s fluidity. Additionally, the base of the sofa is enhanced with patchwork detailing, extending the tactile appeal and creating a harmonious visual connection with the rest of the piece. The seating is detachable, allowing for easy maintenance and customization, while the combination of softness and structured support remains a hallmark of De Sede’s design philosophy. Ulbald Klug DS-1025 "Terrazza" sofas for De Sede, leather, Switzerland, 1974, set of two. Ubald Klug designed this rare modular DS-1025 "Terrazza" sofa as a real living landscape. Each element recalls a terrace-like, stepped slope with different widths and depths. A valley or a mountain can appear depending on how the individual modules are assembled. The "Terrazza" was recreated thanks to the De Sede manufacturer and its ability to transform high-quality leather into seating furniture. This multi-layered upholstered relief invites people to sit or lie down, combining durability and comfort with a unique design. After training at the Art and Design College in Zurich, Ulbald Klug (1932) gained further experience in architectural practices in Zurich and Helsinki. Paris has been his sphere of activity since 1966, when he founded his architecture and interior design bureau. Klug proved himself successful at finding solutions to different challenges and developed non-conformist solutions - from furniture design, to concepts for urban installations, to architectural prototypes...
