English Regency Brass Inlaid Antique Recamier Sofa Chaise Longue, circa 1825

About the Item

With an elegant curvature borrowed directly from the classical Greek designs so highly sought after during the first quarter of the 19th Century, this exquisite recamier is of superb quality with very fine craftsmanship throughout. The dense and vivid primary surfaces, appearing to be mahogany with remnants of a faux-graining to resemble the much coveted rosewood, remain warm and soft from years of rubbing and polishing with numerous layers of wax preserving the early finishing. The brass inlay work is striking and perfect, each major element of the sofa highlighted with it's own brass embellishment. The size is perfect, the back supportive and the sofa quite comfortable with the generous stuffed loose cushion and bolster. Sabre legs support the sofa, each remaining perfectly stable and locked firmly into the frame with curling return spurs highlighted with brass inlays, the legs terminating in cast brass toes over original castors. This is a very fine piece for anyone passionate about English furnishings, the Regency period and objects inspired by Greek classicism. It's skilled craftsmanship and delicate lines make it a form that never seems to go out of style, being a staple to any finely furnished Classical interior. Measurements: 27 1/4" D x 83" W x 34 1/2" H; 19" H to top of cushion Condition Report: Old faux graining to mahogany, since worn off on most areas and most evident on the back. White paint marks along some edges of crest and along apron. Upholstery is in poor condition and should be changed, being heavily discolored and worn; it is in somewhat presentable condition if you plan to hold off on changing it for a little while, but should be changed to be properly enjoyed; the underside of the cushion is more extensively stained, this not photographed.
