  • Johannes Spalt for Wittmann Constanze Sofa in Cognac Leather
    By Johannes Spalt, Karl Wittmann
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, 'Constanze' daybed or sofa, cognac leather, metal, Austria, 1960s. This sofa or daybed, designed by architect Johannes Spalt, is typical for mid-century modern design from Austria of the 1960s. The tufted cognac leather seat and backrest is constructed with a rounded base underneath, also upholstered in leather. A rather rare feature for the well known model called 'Constanze'. This particular model in patinated cognac is a rich and warm appearance because of this base. By only one hand movement the piece turns from a comfortable sofa to daybed. Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. Their ideas and designs are still a great example of Austrian architecture...

  • Johannes Spalt for Wittmann 'Constanze' Sofa in Cognac Leather
    By Wittmann, Johannes Spalt
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, 'Constanze' daybed or sofa, cognac leather, metal, wood, Austria, 1960s. This beautiful sofa designed by architect Johannes Spalt, is typical for Mid-Century Modern design from Austria of the 1960s. The tufted cognac leather is well-designed showing a solid construction of delicate lines and round edges. The seat rests on a platform executed in leather that creates a floating appearance, which brings a more open and inviting look to the quite solid design. The base is finished with a small wooden border at the bottom. This particular design of the base is quite a rare feature when taking his model ‘Constanze’ into account. The age-appropriate patinated cognac contributes to the rich and warm appearance of the sofa. By only one hand movement the piece turns from a comfortable sofa into a daybed.

  • Johannes Spalt Black Leather ‘Constanze’ Sofas or Daybeds
    By Wittmann, Johannes Spalt
    Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, 'Constanze' daybed or sofa, black leather, steel, Austria, 1960s This Austrian daybed named ‘Constanze’ is typical for Mid-Century Modern design from Austria. The tufted leather seat and back is constructed with a slick and clean metal frame. The elegant slim outwards tapered legs create an open feeling and give the sofa the needed air to come across less solid and robust. By only one hand movement, the piece turns from a comfortable sofa to a daybed.
