Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. The seat rests on a platform executed in leather that creates a floating appearance, which brings a more open and inviting look to the quite solid design. The base is finished with a small wooden border at the bottom. This particular design of the base is quite a rare feature when taking his model ‘Constanze’ into account.
