Marcel-Louis Baugniet, sofa, leather, wood, Belgium, 1939 This streamlined sofa by Belgian Avant-Garde artist Marcel-Louis Baugniet is specially designed for a house on the outskirts of Brussels in Watermaal-Bosvoorde, Belgium. This apartment building, also known as ‘Delobe’ (1938/39), is designed by modernist theorist architect Gaston Brunfaut (1894-1974) who was strongly influenced by Le Corbusier’s ideas on simplicity and functionality. Baugniet commissioned Brunfaut to design furniture for one of the Delobe houses, resulting in the creation of this sofa and other pieces. Although Baugniet was a versatile artist, he is most famous for his constructivist paintings characterized by geometric compositions that featured graceful colors alongside stark forms. Baugniet's furniture reflects the same artistic approach evident in this sofa. The construction of the sofa is based on a crescent shape contoured with round smooth edges. The sofa is reupholstered in a soft purple mohair that complements its austere and understated appearance. He believed that in order for furniture to be beautiful, it must first be functional, this principle guided him in all of his furniture designs. He emphasized the importance of simplicity and striving for perfection in order to achieve harmony in one's life. The sofa's symmetrical appearance and solid construction are testament to its excellent craftsmanship and artistic merit. Marcel-Louis Baugniet (1896-1995) is a multi-talented Belgian Avant-Garde artist who was a painter and theoretician, and made furniture, collages, posters, tapestries, advertising illustrations, ceramics, and theater costumes and decors. Baugniet was born on March 18, 1896, in Luik, Belgium. While studying painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, Baugniet encountered René Magritte, Paul Delvaux, Victor Servranckx, and Pierre-Louis Flouquet. After his graduation, he moved to Paris and discovered abstract art through Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Robert Delaunay, and František Kupka. Baugniet developed an affinity for Russian constructivism, eventually becoming a pioneering figure for this movement in Belgium. At the age of twenty-six, he moved back to Brussels and married the dancer Marguerite Acarin (1904-1999), also known as Akarova, for whom he designed constructivist inspired theater costumes and decors. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Baugniet also wrote articles on aesthetics and applied arts for the weekly magazine ‘7 Arts’. Alongside Dutch architect Van Tonderen, he published a manifesto for their movement titled "LE BEAU, C'EST L'UTILE" (Beautiful is what is useful). Towards the end of the 1920s, Baugniet divorced Akarova and opened an interior design shop together with E. Van Tonderen in Brussels in 1927. Starting in 1929, he established and owned his own company. He shifted his attention towards interior architecture and developed, among others, furniture pieces and tapestries. Baugniet created a forum for artists, writers, politicians, and intellectuals of various backgrounds to come together and exchange ideas. Baugniet took part in several international exhibitions of decorative arts throughout his career. He passed away in Brussels on February 1, 1995.
