About the Item

Designed in the early phase of what we know today as Mid-Century Modern, this curved sofa was produced by the so-called cabinetmakers, a rare breed of craftsmen who had to be recognized by the Danish government after several years of toiling at his craft, as well as having to ace gruelling design competitions before becoming a master cabinetmaker. Since Denmark was a special instance of tempered industrialization, it managed to preserve sound traditions and continued to safeguard values of craftsmanship, materiality and usability. As this stylish two-seater sofa shows, the Danish design idiom was centred on warm woods, quality fabrics and gentle yet robust support for the spine. The design directs the eyes to the voluptuous, fully upholstered body that has a curved, enveloping shape. In combination with the unadorned style of Danish mid-century modern design, the fabric’s texture and the curves serve as the main decorative elements. This streamlined, modernist version of the Art Deco’s banana sofa has an inherent cosiness that defines the Danish notion of “hygge”. The accent pillow, that can be ordered separately, shows how well this model can be combined with different materials, colours and shapes. The solid beech legs have a beautiful colour and grain, injecting the organic material into the design. In combination with the unadorned styles of mid-century design, this sofa brings together the best attributes of the era. The “Great Danes” believed furniture should be shorn of aesthetic detail and be an amalgam of form and function, a sentiment that gave birth to this two-seater sofa as well.
