Antique English Leather Chesterfield Sofa that just emerged out of our inhouse Old Plank Upholstery Department, after a very long and exhausted stay. Restoring or conserving an old leather is truly a dying Art and very few shops today have the knowledge to properly Restore old leather. The Classic English Chesterfield Tufted Leather Sofa was invented in the mid-1700’s when Lord Philip Stanhope (1694-1773), who was the Fourth Earl of Chesterfield decided to commission a comfortable sofa for his guests to sit on. Today, the Classic English Chesterfield Sofa is one of the most recognized and popular sofas in the world and for good reason. The Chesterfield Sofa is both comfortable, great looking and never goes out of style. Our Antique English Leather Chesterfield Sofa is but one of (3) Antique Leather Chesterfield Sofas we have in stock, with each one having gone through a lengthy and laborious Conservation Process. Our Upholstery Department tries to save as much of the Original Leather as possible and generally we save about 75%. The coil springs are re-tied 8-ways by hand and we only use Horsehair, Shredded Coco Fibers, and Wadded Wool for padding. Describing the colour of this Chesterfield may be more difficult than the Conservation process. The colour is neither Black, nor Brown or Cordovan, but rather a rich blend of all three. An elegant and rare tubular steel modernist sofa attributed to PEL (Practical Equipment Ltd) The chromium plated steel wraps around the back and forms the armrests. It is upholstered in an old neutral textile and is ready for recovering. This sofa was commissioned for the lobby of a series of odeon cinemas opened in the early 1930's, notably the Muswell Hill Odeon, designed by George Coles. This sofa offers a rarely found intact example of British modernism in the golden age of cinema, influenced by the 30s designs of the German Bauhaus and their pioneering work in tubular steel furniture.
The frame bears all the hallmarks and design details of Practical Equipment Ltd. It was most likely designed for PEL by either Oliver Bernard or Serge Chermayeff.
We offer in-house upholstery and advice on suitable fabrics to complete this sofa's restoration. Price on application.
Practical Equipment Ltd, known later simply as PEL, were the leading manufacturers of modernist tubular steel furniture in Britain. Established in Oldbury, near Birmingham the company was formed in 1931 by parent company Tube Investments, who were hoping to emulate the success of Thonet in producing tubular steel furniture. English Chesterfield Leather Sofa Lion Paw Feet Properly and Thoroughly Restored

Vintage English Chesterfield sofa that we recently imported from Ireland and promptly handed over to our inhouse Old Plank upholstery department for a proper and thorough restoration. When we use the term restoration, we actually mean conservation with the initial concept of rebuilding the Chesterfield sofa from the inside out, while using as many of the original components as possible and in particular saving as much of the original leather as possible. Our English Chesterfield sofa was disassembled and the coil springs were tied 8-ways by hand. In each area where we had to add padding, our Old Plank upholstery department used horsehair, shredded coco fiber and cotton. Everything is done here old school and maybe it takes longer and the raw materials may cost more, but in the long run the sofa is going to hold its shape, be super comfortable and last for decades. Even the solid brass (bronze optional) lion paw feet we have cast locally for us and are used on our new Old Plank sofas...
