Rosewood & Butterscotch Leather MP-163 "Earth" 3-Seater Sofa by Percival Lafer

About the Item

We've had several Percival Lafer sofas and chairs over the years, and this MP-163 "Earth" model sofa is by far the most comfortable. The scoop style and high-back design cradles and supports the body all the way up to the head. To put it simply, it has a "gangster lean". The scoop allows your butt to sink down with a slight elevation of your legs. High enough for tall people to have head support, and low enough for short people to have their feet planted firmly on the floor. It's a time-capsule quality couch that should be in the museum of Brazilian Modern Design. Procured from the original owner who purchased in Oregon in the late 1970s, where it sat virtually untouched for decades. This butterscotch cognac leather is really the quintessentially perfect color for the style and tone of the solid rosewood frame. As tasteful and inviting today as it was 4 decades ago, the diamond-sewn and pinch-tufted upholstery drips with texture and character. This parquet patchwork of square, interlocking panels covers the fronts, while the back has a smoother curve of stretched leather that nestles onto the frame. The leather has been thoroughly cleaned and conditioned. A few square panel sections appear to have been replaced. These replacement panels are not an exact color match. Barely influenced by northern European design compared to most of his colleagues in his early days as a designer, Lafers' work has always been traced back to his Brazilian roots. The diffuse use of local woods, the strength and hardness of his elegant designs and the warm colors of his fabrics and leathers, make him a fundamental figure in the evolution and affirmation of Brazilian design, both inside and outside the country’s borders. Lafer 3-Seater Couch 74.5” Long x 32.75” Deep x 34.5” High (15” seat height).

  • Tulip Group Sofa in Rosewood by K M Wilkins for G-Plan of England
    By G Plan Furniture
    Located in Chattanooga, TN
Matching pair of lounge chairs also available and sold separately (see last pic). This incredible sofa was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept it in pristine condition. Designed by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the "Tulip Group". Wilkins also designed the the well known Housemaster Chair, often misattributed to Ib Kofod Larsen. The "Tulip" design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded into curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it's a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment. The sofa hovers on its original Magnum Orbit chrome...
