About the Item

Set of 4 first edition Carlo Scarpa 'Cornaro' Sofa's for Simon, Italy, 1970's Rare complete set of four Cornaro sofa's by Italian architect Carlo Scarpa, designed in 1973 for Simon Gavina. The set consists of two armchairs, one two-seater, and one three-seater, which can comfortably seat up to five people. The frames are crafted from solid Iroko wood, a highly durable hardwood often referred to as African teak. Known for its density, natural resistance to wear, and rich warm tone, Iroko features a distinctive grain pattern punctuated by small natural flecks that add depth and texture. The woodwork on this set is in excellent condition. All original cushions are present. The three-seater retains its original upholstery in very good vintage condition. The two armchairs and the two-seater require new upholstery, offering buyers the option to select fabrics to their own taste. Upholstery can be arranged by the seller, or the buyer may provide their own material. Scarpa’s design combines a strict, architectural frame with deep, generously padded cushions. The stitched-panel construction on the cushions adds visual rhythm and texture, giving the design a layered, sculptural quality. Carlo Scarpa is widely regarded as one of Italy’s most influential post-war architects and designers. His work has been exhibited in major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Cornaro is among his most recognisable furniture designs, comparable in cultural significance to the work of contemporaries such as Osvaldo Borsani, Franco Albini, and Afra & Tobia Scarpa.

Corner Sofa Blond Wood and Fabric, Italy, 1950's
By Ico Parisi
Located in Uithoorn, NL
Corner sofa in blond wood and fabric,, Italy, 1950's What stands out most in this low corner bench are the recesses in the framework and the 9 straight, tapered, squared stiletto legs that are so typical for that period in Italy. As you can see the backrest is optional and was probably designed later to give it some extra comfort. Back in the days these sofas were mostly used for very practical purposes like a quick coffee or pasta. This sofa would work very well in a corner of course but strangely enough this rectangular sofa also works very well in the middle of a room for example with a round table and two chairs...
