Small Martin Visser BZ29 Sofa for t' Spectrum in Plum with Teak Armrests, 1960

About the Item

Martin Visser's BZ29 settee for 't Spectrum features a rectilinear black enameled metal frame with square-section legs and flat teak armrests that extend outward at seat level. The angled backrest and seat are upholstered as separate padded elements, re-covered in plum woven fabric. The horizontal geometry and material pairing of metal and teak reflect Visser's disciplined, functionalist approach to seating design. Martin Visser (1922–2009) joined 't Spectrum in Bergeijk, Netherlands, and became Head of Design in 1954. Trained as an engineer before turning to furniture design, Visser brought structural rigor to Post-War Dutch modernism. As wartime restrictions on metal use lifted, Visser worked extensively with tubular and flat-bar steel, producing a body of work that prioritized construction logic over decoration. The BZ29 represents that ethos — frame and upholstery treated as distinct, honest components. The metal frame shows wear consistent with age and use. The upholstery is a later re-cover in plum fabric and presents well.
