About the Item

Sofa/daybed model 4312 designed by Børge Mogensen. produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. Solid oak and ash frame with brass hardware and original spring mattress and cushions. The daybed has its original cotil wool fabric intact in exceptional condition. The fabric was designed by Danish designer Lis Ahlman, whom Mogensen collaborated with during a big part of his career. Very good vintage condition with few signs of age related wear and patina. Børge Mogensen (1914-1972) was one of the most influential designers in shaping Danish Modern design and Fredericia’s founding designer from 1955 until his untimely death in 1972. He found inspiration all over the world in his quest to create everyday objects that would endure for generations. Mogensen's most recognised pieces were developed during his collaboration and friendship with Andreas Graversen, Fredericia’s CEO from 1955 - 1995. Børge Mogensen was a pioneer who helped establish Denmark as a culture of furniture design. His life-long ambition was to create durable, useful furniture that would enrich people’s everyday lives. Functional furniture for all parts of the home and society. A trained cabinet-maker and furniture designer, Mogensen attended the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts before enrolling at the school of furniture design at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Kaare Klint. After graduating in 1941, Mogensen continued to defend the ideals of evolutionary design that were essential to Klint’s own principles, while also expanding on design traditions. Contrary to Klint, Mogensen explored classic cabinet-maker typologies and techniques, finding fresh solutions that facilitated mass production. He also pursued projects that contributed to the surge in informal housing during the 1960s. In 1948, Mogensen participated in MoMA’s “International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design”. Back home in Denmark, inspired by the exhibition, he experimented with plywood shells and merged aspects of the global modernist movement with his own design identity. He also found inspiration in ethnic arts & crafts, lithography and Japanese wooden carvings. Shortly after opening his own design firm in 1950, Mogensen began collaborating with young interior architect and entrepreneur, Andreas Graversen, who would later become the owner of Fredericia Furniture. Among the great mid-20th century Danish furniture designers, Børge Mogensen distinguished himself with his faith to traditional values of craftsmanship and honesty of materials.

While peers such as Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl and Arne Jacobsen designed some of the most striking and now iconic furnishings of the era, Mogensen focused on making pieces that were simple, durable and comfortable — and in the long run perhaps more useful and better loved.

Mogensen studied under and later worked for Kaare Klint, a master cabinetmaker whose chief tenets were quality of construction and simplicity of line. Klint was a classicist, who believed that furniture forms should evolve from those of historical models. So, too, in his way was Mogensen, as two of his best-known earlier pieces attest. His 1945 Spokeback Sofa, with hinged arms that can be lowered to facilitate lounging, is a reinterpretation of the venerable Knole settee. With the oval silhouette of its plywood backrest and waterdrop-shaped cutouts, Mogenson’s Shell chair, designed in 1949, can be seen as a novel take on early 19th century Empire side chairs.

Yet Mogensen shared the aesthetical sensibilities of his most forward-looking colleagues. His cabinets deploy the same spare geometries and lushly figured woods as those of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his disciple Florence Knoll, the chief difference being that Mies and Knoll used chrome steel for the frames and legs of their pieces. The brawny oak frames and slung leather seats and backrests of Mogensen’s Hunting chair (1950) and Spanish chair (1958) display the same hefty construction and appreciation of natural materials seen in the work of Charlotte Perriand and Sergio Rodrigues.

As you will see from the furnishings on 1stDibs, Børge Mogensen designed for function more than sculptural effect. While his chairs may not be the first pieces in a décor to draw the eye, they are often the first to draw in those looking for a comfortable seat.
