About the Item

This rare Tulip Seating Group by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England is a sculptural expression of 1970s British modernism, where form and function intersect in elegant harmony. The set features warm, richly figured rosewood panels that curve gently around each chair and sofa like unfolding petals—an organic gesture echoed in the name “Tulip.” Designed in 1970 and acquired from the original owners in Glasgow, the pieces have been carefully preserved and professionally restored with utmost sensitivity to their original materials and proportions. The armchairs and sofa are upholstered in a plush velvet that defies simple categorization. Somewhere between olive and taupe, the color shifts subtly depending on light and angle, lending an atmospheric richness to the group. The rosewood side and back panels showcase captivating grain patterns in hues of deep amber, complemented by original chrome casters and hardware that give each piece an elegant mobility and modernist edge. Though the set arrived in exceptional vintage condition, our restoration was comprehensive and executed with the future collector in mind. The chairs were completely disassembled to access the internal support structure. The original deck support webbing was replaced with new, heavy-duty 3-inch industrial-grade elastic webbing, guaranteeing long-term comfort and performance. The original foam cushions were retained to preserve the integrity and period-authentic profile of the seating. Each rosewood panel was cleaned and polished by hand, and the chrome fixtures were restored to a bright luster. Dimensions are as follows: Sofa: 81.5” W x 36” D x 29” H (seat height: 17.5”) Chairs: 37” W x 36” D x 29” H (seat height: 17.5”) Beyond its undeniable comfort, this Tulip group stands as a sophisticated statement in any setting—from an architect’s loft to a meticulously curated gallery of 20th-century design. The fusion of exotic wood, tactile velvet, and sleek chrome reflects a transitional moment in modernist furniture, when British makers like G-Plan were redefining postwar elegance for a new global audience. As a full suite or offered individually, these pieces invite both admiration and use. They are not only enduring in structure but deeply evocative in design—an invitation to sit within a piece of sculptural history.

Tulip Group Sofa in Rosewood by K M Wilkins for G-Plan of England
By Percival Lafer, Charles and Ray Eames, G Plan Furniture, Thonet
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Matching pair of lounge chairs also available and sold separately (see last pic). This incredible sofa was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept it in pristine condition. Designed by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the "Tulip Group". Wilkins also designed the the well known Housemaster Chair, often misattributed to Ib Kofod Larsen. The "Tulip" design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded into curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it's a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment. The sofa hovers on its original Magnum Orbit chrome...
