The DS-1025 'Terrazza' sofa, a truly iconic and distinctive seating landscape, was designed by Swiss creative Ubald Klug in 1973 for the luxury leather manufacturer De Sede. Presented here as a two-piece set in a rich, warm sienna brown leather, the design revolutionized seating by moving beyond conventional structures to create a sculptural, layered, and entirely flexible experience. Inspired by the terraced hills of the Swiss Alps and vineyards, the design is a playful, funky, and spirited icon of the Pop Art and Postmodern eras, highly sought after for its visual drama and lounge-ready comfort.
Each individual element is ingeniously constructed with seven graduated tiers of cushioned leather on a rectangular base, resembling a stepped slope with varying widths and depths. The modular construction allows for versatile arrangement—the two pieces can be abutted to form an inviting two-seater sofa, a seating pyramid, or an abstract "mountain range" of forms, enabling personalized seating configurations. The distinctive tiered structure provides multiple surfaces and heights for sitting, lounging, or sprawling, perfectly aligning with the increasingly informal lifestyle trends of the 1970s.
This vintage set is in original condition, showcasing the authentic charm of a well-lived history, with visible wear consistent with age and use. Ubald Klug’s 1974 DS-1025, also known as the Terrazza sofa, is an enduring favorite with its cascading levels of leather. In 2017, de Sede expanded its product line to include high-quality leather handbags, which are as thoughtfully designed and beautifully crafted as its furniture. De Sede AG is now part of the Volare Group AG and continues to handcraft its fine furniture and other goods from its factory in Klingnau.
