About the Item
Designed in 1935 by Thomas Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) and relaunched, manufactured, and licensed by Cassina in 1988. Solid wood frame, polyurethane/polyester upholstery. New wool fabric with a handmade artistic interpretation of the original blanket stitch.
The architect T G Rietveld designed the Utrecht sofa while working for the Metz & Co. department store in Amsterdam, where his design brief was to make a sofa for serial production. Aspired to provide a comfortable and relaxing experience, he used modern techniques and solid materials inspired by the sturdier crates than the furniture inside. The sofa set became an icon of the Neoplastic/De Stijl movement and Rietveld’s experimental vision.

Inspired by the fashion industry and its ability to amplify a strong personal vision, this art piece is a dialogue about fitting in and belonging. Fitting in is about adopt to a situation and becoming who you need to be to become accepted. Where belonging doesn’t require us to change who we are; it requires us to be who we are.
The left armrest’s over-dimensioned stitching states the date of design, 1935, in roman numerals (MCMXXXV), and the right armrest displays the remodeling date 2021 (MMXXI).
