Vintage Midcentury 1960s Mahogany and Wool Sofa Daybed by Illums Bolighus

About the Item

This is a clever little vintage midcentury Danish sofa that is both a comfortable sofa and also a day/overnight bed. It features fold down arms and a removable back that allows bedding to be stored in the actual sofa back itself. Sheathed in satin wood veneer the back is enclosed by a wool fabric panel that can be removed to allow access, the back also locks the arms in place by use of two sturdy metal folding frames. Once removed the back can be stored under the bed (as shown in one of the photographs), and the arms then fold down and lock in place to create a single bed. The sofa has been beautifully reupholstered at some time in its life in an aqua blue wool which is enhanced by brown leather piping. The back panel and the two scatter cushions (included in the item price) have been finished in brown wool and also feature leather piping. All the upholstery and the wooden base and frame are in excellent condition with very few marks to be seen – the thick metal folding brackets, whilst showing their age, are free from any rust or structural defects. Originally founded in 1925 (under the name BO) over the years Illums Bolighus have gained an enviable reputation for commissioning high end interior design items. Their flagship store was launched in Copenhagen in 1941 and further reinvented in 1961 by architect Kay Kørbing to become the key Danish store to buy cutting edge and beautiful furniture, textiles and art. This sofa bears the Illums Bolighus branding plaque on the underside of the frame as shown.
