About the Item

A vintage Finnish black textured vinyl and tubular chromed steel three seater sofa designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro. Circa late 1970-80s. Provenance: Sainsbury Centre of Visual Arts Norwich, which opened in 1978. This was part of a number of Yrjö Kukkapuro sofas and chairs used around the exhibition areas. They were auctioned off on site in 2004. A very comfortable ergonomic sofa, the foam seat cushions have been renewed. The fabric has been cleaned, showing vintage wear, but no tears. The chrome has a few light pitting marks in places, mainly to the joins, but overall very good where on show. The clips to the back are made of leather, the top ones have been replaced. Yrjö Kukkapuro is one of our most internationally renowned and award-winning furniture designers, and one of the most important modernists in Finnish furniture design. Kukkapuro's design work is based on both aesthetic and functional innovation, user experience and ergonomics. The photograph shows a Yrjö Kukkapuro sofa in the middle of the Sainsbury Centre during its construction. Condition report: Some of the Expersprings show rust marks, and a number show some spring stretch to them. They are all however complete and not broken (these springs are available online should you ever require more). One of the metal spring holders and spring is missing at the top of the left hand side. This does not give it quite so much support, however, it does not detract from the comfort of the seating.
