About the Item

Stool designed by Dom Hans van der Laan for the Abbey Church of St. Benedictusberg, Vaals in the Netherlands. Manufactured, circa 1980. Lacquered wood seat with copper nails. In good original condition, with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. Dom Hans van der Laan, originator, architect, designer. Benedictine monk and architect Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) may have had a small body of work, but his legacy is highly regarded in the world of architecture. Although he designed three monasteries and a private dwelling, it was not until he reached the age of 53 that he completed his first real design, the St Benedictusberg Abbey in Vaals. The building was immediately acclaimed as his masterpiece. The greatest part of Van der Laan's life, however, was dedicated to conceptualizing form, proportion and the way in which human beings perceive architectural spaces. He also developed the theory of plastic numbers.

Gaulino Stool Red by Oscar Tusquets for BD Barcelona

Gaulino Stool by Oscar Tusquets for BD Barcelona This stool is, alongside the entire collection, a testament to Oscar Tusquets’ creativity and the influence of Gaulino as a whole. Inspired by Antonio Gaudi and Carlo Mollino, Tusquets created 'Gaulino' in 1987. It was an industrially hand-crafted chair with a contoured wooden frame, slender tapering legs and smooth rich leather. The artisanal chair became a modern icon of 20th-century design. The stool has a concave seat, avoiding the sitter from slouching their back. Its legs are reminiscent of the Gaulino and its backless frame gives the stool a lightness in the home. It can be taken around, tucked under a table or fitted between furnishings. The seat is practical, referential and stylish. It’s the Gaulino again, just in a different light. Born in Barcelona in 1941, Oscar Tusquets graduated as an architect in 1965 from Barcelona’s Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura and was a member of Studi Per, together with Pep Bonet, Cristian Cirici, Lluís Clotet, and Mireia Riera. In 1972, they founded BD together, and Tusquets set about designing furniture and other objects, which would be recognised by the Spanish National Design Award. A number of his pieces appear in renowned museum collections, such as the MoMA in New York and the Centre George Pompidou in Paris. He has also been honoured with the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes (Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts), the insignia of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of the Arts and Letters) and the Creu de Sant Jordi (Cross of Sant Jordi). Since the ‘90s, he has published books on a wide range of design-related topics. About the manufacturer: BD has been around for over half a century. It was founded in a nightclub in 1972 by a bunch of young architects and designers from Barcelona. They broke into the design world with a new vision: to produce and market their designs, and the designs of their friends with complete creative freedom and design criteria. Beginning with the designs of contemporaries like Ettore Sottsass, Rennie Mackintosh and Álvaro Siza, BD provoked a curiosity about design. These early pieces helped bring international recognition to the country’s design scene, and many of them still exist today. They are an international design company run by a collective ownership —Apartamento Magazine (Nacho Alegre, Omar Sosa, Marco Velardi), Taller Bofill (Pablo Bofill, Ricardo Bofill, Luna Paiva...
