Dutch Art Deco Stool or Tabouret, design by Piet Kramer for Randoe, 1920s

About the Item

A stylish Amsterdam School stool in solid oak with vintage leather upholstery. These stools were manufactured in the early 1920s for the luxury wallpaper and paint shops Rath & Doodeheefver (see images). Famous Amsterdam School architect Piet Kramer was appointed as the interior designer for these shops. For this reason the design of this stool has been attributed to Kramer. Manufactured by Randoe, Haarlem. The stool can be used as a seat, a footstool or a pouf. It is very well made, heavy and in excellent condition considering age and use. Pieter Lodewijk (Piet) Kramer (Amsterdam, 1 July 1881 – Santpoort, 4 February 1961) was a Dutch architect, and one of the most important architects of the Amsterdam School (Expressionist architecture). From 1903 to 1911 Piet Kramer worked in the architectural practice of Eduard Cuypers, where he came into contact with the architects Johan van der Mey and Michel de Klerk. In 1911 van der Mey received the commission to design the Scheepvaarthuis (Shipping House), a cooperative building for six Dutch shipping companies. Van der Mey sought the assistance of his former colleague-architects Piet Kramer and Michel de Klerk to realize this building. The Scheepvaarthuis (1913–1916) is considered the starting point of the Amsterdam School movement. Later Piet Kramer collaborated with Michel de Klerk on the well-known De Dageraad housing project in Amsterdam South (1919–1923). Outside Amsterdam he built one of his masterpieces, the De Bijenkorf Store in The Hague (1924–1926). After the death of Michel de Klerk in 1923, Piet Kramer was the leading architect of the Amsterdam School until the end of this movement in the beginning of the 1930s.

  • Dutch Art Deco desk lamp by Daalderop, 1920s
    By Daalderop KDM Royal Holland
    Located in EVERDINGEN, NL
A rare Dutch Art Deco table lamp or bedside light by Dutch manufacturer Daalderop, c. 1925. The piece is in excellent condition regarding its age. These lamps were produced in brass and nickel plate. This one is the nickel version. The lampshade is made of painted parchment, and is reminiscent of batik (tie-dyed) designs by Bogtman. The top can come off to change the lightbulb. Because of punched holes in the top as well as the bottom the light shines through these holes when placed in a dark room, which has a lovely effect on the surrounding surface. These holes had an aesthetic function as well as necessary in those times for the heat of the (incandescent) lightbulb to escape. It now works with modern energy efficient (E27) lightbulbs. The one that is now inside will be included. The Daalderop factory was founded in 1880 by J.N. Daalderop. in the eraly years they produced household items like tableware, pots and dishes, kettles, and gas lamps. The style of the products evolved towards that of art deco and the Amsterdam School. At the end of the 1930s, the company had approximately a thousand employees, making it one of the largest employers in Tiel. The family business was under the undisputed leadership of Johan Daalderop (1883-1961). Until the Second World War their most important designer was Meine Huisenga. Klaas van Aken was also one of the designers. The lamp is depicted in the Dutch Art Deco/Art Nouveau guide...
