"Indigo 01 Bench" Ltd. Ed. Partially Glazed Stoneware Stool by Pascale Girardin

About

"Indigo" is a partially glazed stoneware stool, designed and produced by Canadian artist Pascale Girardin in a limited edition. It's part of the Cobalt Collection, which was the result of 18-months of research and hundreds of color tests to perfect the final hue. This wheel-thrown stool is a poignant expression of the series. Animated by Girardin’s brushwork, it achieves a masterful balance between spontaneity and permanence. DIMENSIONS: Ø 10.75", H. 13.5" Pascale Girardin said about "Indigo 01 Bench": "I dreamt of the deepest blues which summoned the ocean’s vastness and whose qualities evoked the richness and fluidity of Japanese Sumi ink." On her travels through China and Japan, artist Pascale Girardin became fascinated with the indigo shades used in classical pottery, from the Shibori patterns on sake cups to the brushstrokes on Qin dynasty porcelains – their hues as alive and relevant today as they were centuries ago. Returning home to Montreal, Girardin began a series of experiments to develop a signature indigo glaze that would capture the energy of Asian ceramics. PASCALE GIRARDIN is a Canadian ceramic artist whose work ranges from functional tableware to large-scale architectural installations. She has gained international recognition, collaborating with some of the world’s top design firms on projects that include the Shanghai’s Four Seasons Place, New York’s Peninsula Hotel, Paris’ Printemps department store and Dubai’s Al Badia Golf Club, among many others. Originally trained as a painter, she has contributed to the dynamism of contemporary ceramics by exploring and investing spaces with her large-scale architectural installations. Whether suspended in mid-air, grazing a wall or floating in water, her works evoke nature’s omnipresence and organic structure, subtly underlying our fundamental relationship with the world we live in. In the past few years, Pascale has broadened her practice by using new materials such as aluminum, cast resin, polycarbonate and wood. Deriving from her ceramic practice, these works permit her to develop large structures previously unachievable due to the technical limitations of clay. Pascale Girardin also designs and produces dishware for high-end restaurants in North America (J&G Grill, Nobu, le Toqué!) - supporting the notion that the art of living and the life of a work of art are intrinsically linked.
