Max Bill's Ulm Stool / Authentic Mid-Century Swiss Design

About the Item

The piece embodies minimalist design principles, characterized by a clear shape and simplified form with subtle detailing. It is reduced to the minimum. Compared to most minimalist design of the last 30 years, which is just a superficial attitude, here we can see that it is seeking something essential in an unspoiled way. Ulm stool was designed by the Swiss architect and artist Max Bill, in collaboration with Hans Gugelot, in 1954. It is one of the most iconic pieces of mid-century Swiss Design. As Max Bill was the father of constructive art, he was one of the most prominent designers of Switzerland and Germany. The piece is very formal in its shape, with a mathematical precison. While it is an iconic piece and a representation of pure geometrical art, it is however, soulless. Manufactured in the school’s workshop at the Ulm School of Design, it has a multifunctional aspect. It was used a students’ chair, a stool, a table or a shelf. All parts are authentic. They are done in massive pine wood. The piece is signed personally by Max Bill. I think this piece blends well with many interior styles. Due to its transformability in use, it can be used as a stool, a table or a shelf. A subtle detail for all spaces. P! Galerie’s selection is mainly focused on design masterpieces between 1918 and 1970. Apart from rare French mid-century modern design artefacts by Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Prouvé, Le Corbusier, and Charlotte Perriand, our offer includes masterpieces of historic importance and value by Gerrit Rietveld, Lina Bo Bardi, Marcel Breuer, Oscar Niemeyer, or, for example, Eileen Gray. Following all ethical and juridical requirements, all items from our carefully curated collection come with a certificate of authenticity. We try to preserve as much of patina as possible during the process of restoration, as it defines these historic pieces. Not only do we cooperate with museums and offer auction houses our services and expert opinion, we also look forward to welcoming you as a private collector and connoisseur.
