Handmade Oak Stool with Leather Strap Top, Arts & Crafts Late 19th Century
Located in Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is a good handmade stool with a well turned solid oak frame and a woven leather strap top, all dating to the Arts & Crafts period of the late 19th century.
The stool is made of solid oak. The frame joints into four legs with ring turned detail and with four jointed rectangular cross stretchers between the legs, making this a very strong construction. The seat top is made of interwoven reddish-brown leather straps which sit on fabric webbing below the leather and give additional support to the seat. The seat is finished off with four narrow leather strips that run along the lower seat edge, one on each side, that are secured by brass nail studs.
The stool has developed a good patina from age and use and the reddish-brown leather has a deep natural mature shine, only achieved by repeated polishing and use over the years.
This piece is made in the 17th century Jacobean style but we date the stool to the late 19th century, made in the English Arts & Crafts period of the late 19th century.
Please note the images are taken both indoors and outdoors in different light conditions.
Notes on English leather topped seating
Leather covers on English seating dates back to the middle ages and the 16th century. Mature leather seats can be as tough and polished as the wood of the frame itself. During the reign of Elizabeth 1st...

Vintage Egyptian Revival Handmade Wood Thebes Stool
Located in Topeka, KS
Fabulous vintage Egyptian Revival handmade wood Thebes stool. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. The joints have been glued. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Early to Mid-20th Century.
We have a stool that will make you DROOL!!!! This is an AWESOME vintage Egyptian Revival handmade wood Thebes stool comprised of a lovely wood frame with lattice bracing under the curved plywood seat, straight legs, and stretchers on all four sides. Simple lines and a unique presence. So… Thebes stools have been around for quite some time!! As a matter of fact, one was discovered in the tomb of King Tutankhamum circa 1400 B.C.!! In the late 19th century, Liberty of London began producing the Egyptian-style stool in flexible-yet-durable plywood as a part of the store's Furnishing & Decorating Studio. Liberty continued manufacturing the stool until approximately 1919 and, since that time, designers have reproduced the style all over the world. I’d say they are here to stay!! As a piece of practical design, the Thebes stool functions as both a seat and an ottoman and will be wonderful in any room of your home! It is Egyptian Revival in style with an Arts & Crafts flair and it’s going to blend in beautifully with your décor! You could use it as is or throw a pillow on top. It’s very versatile and lightweight so it is easily moved from space to space. King Tutankhamum loved his Thebes stool enough to take it to his tomb…. Now, that’s a cool stool...

Early Gordon Russell Cotswold School Oak & Leather Stool
By Gordon Russell
Located in Norwich, GB
Cotswold School oak & leather stool designed by Gordon Russell (1892-1980) for Russell & Sons, Broadway. Circa 1924.
Gordon Russell and his father set up Russell and Sons in 1922. Gordon Russell designed this stool around 1924, making it a rare early example. It shows the influence of the Cotswold school of makers, who were in turn influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement. The stool has peg construction and wagon chamfering oak supports, which have a slight tapering design, with a leather interlaced top.
The stool is in very good to excellent original untouched condition, and the oak has a wonderful rich colour. The leather is all sound, showing light signs of use as expected. There is no maker's label to the piece, please refer to photographs showing an original photograph of the same stool design.
