About the Item

We kindly suggest reading the full description, as we aim to provide detailed technical and historical information to ensure the authenticity of our items. This iconic and distinctive bamboo stool features a wide, comfortable round seat supported by four sturdy legs that gently curve outward, enhancing its stability. Both the seat and legs are crafted from robust, heat-shaped bamboo, while all the strong bindings are made of rattan. The overall design gives the stool a light and airy appearance. Handcrafted with extraordinary skill in a workshop in Brianza (Lombardy, Italy), this piece was produced between 1960 and 1965. The tradition of these rustic furnishings dates back to the late 19th century in the United States, quickly spreading to Europe and Italy, particularly in Brianza, the Po Valley, and Tuscany. Originally considered a humble material, bamboo has evolved in contemporary design into a refined and luxurious detail, enhanced by hours of meticulous handcrafting by a highly specialized artisan class that is now increasingly rare. The term "bamboo" refers to a group of fast-growing evergreen grasses that thrive in tropical or humid climates. All bamboo species share a tall, hollow stalk that is easy to work with while maintaining exceptional strength. This material is widely used for making furniture, chairs, loungers, sofas, decorative items, and even flooring and parquet. Bamboo is particularly valued for its resistance to weather conditions—its flexible, hollow stem, combined with extraordinarily strong roots, allows it to withstand storms without breaking. Symbolizing purity, strength, and resilience, bamboo is one of the most versatile natural materials. Other similar materials commonly used in the same industry include: • Rattan – Derived from the Indian cane (also known as "Indian rattan"), which, after being sun-dried at the edges of forests, develops exceptional durability and strength. It is often used for outdoor finishes, with or without its outer bark. • Rattan Core – Sourced from the inner part of the rattan cane, it is split into very thin strips. More refined and elegant than Indian rattan, it is also more delicate. • Wicker – Made by weaving willow branches or other flexible plants. The elasticity and resilience of willow wicker have made it ideal for basketry and other woven goods throughout history. • Rush – A perennial plant that grows in marshy or coastal areas. When processed, it is used to produce Vienna straw. Bamboo is primarily cultivated in China, Thailand, and Indonesia, from where it is exported worldwide. However, it is also grown in Italy, particularly in regions with favorable climates such as Lombardy, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, and Tuscany. Regardless of the material's origin, the entire processing phase takes place in Italy, demonstrating how bamboo craftsmanship is a perfect fusion of raw material, artisanal expertise, and artistic sensibility. For centuries, Italian artisans have proudly passed down their skills, creating unique works of art renowned for their beauty and refinement. The item is in good condition. Louis XVI Style French Bench with "Vienna Straw" Seat
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Interesting and graceful oak bench; the legs, conical and elegantly fluted, are joined at the base by a well-designed and harmonious X-shaped element; the well-solid frame is carved with simple, linear, and refined motifs; the upper oval part serves as the seat is enriched with fine "Vienna straw" work. The bench was made between 1880 and 1885 in an artisan workshop near Paris certainly by a very skilled master cabinetmaker because this kind of workmanship requires a lot of experience and skill. The process of seat construction using equidistant holes and a woven plant material (drawn guinea cane) was known since Egyptian times (a stool was found in the tomb of the architect Kha dating from 1600° B.C.), but it was from the mid-19th century that it became popular worldwide. It was the Austro-Hungarian cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (father of bentwood) who in 1842 created chair No. 4 with this technique for the Daum café on Vienna's Kohlmarkt, but success came in 1859 when the Gebruder Thonet company of Michael's sons presented chair No. 14 made of curved solid wood with a straw seat...
