About the Item

Wonderful, adjustable height, 'appoggio' drafting stool by italian architect and designer Claudio Salocchi (1934-2012) for Sormani, 1971. The exquisite sculptural form moulded from laquered fibreglass refers back to the biomorphic forms created by Carlo Mollino and Carlo Graffi and yet still remains ultra contemporary, see recent works by Zaha Hadid, Ross Lovegrove etc. It closely resembles a minimalist reduction of a skeletal pelvis and spine and is anatomically shaped to correspond to the base of the pelvis. The 'appoggio' stool is part of the permanent design collection of the museum of modern art ,New York . Please see Image 7 This example is in very nice completely original condition, importantly for collectors and purists, the sculptural fibreglass form still retains its original colored gel coat , which is now a very slightly off white due to UV exposure over the last 40 plus years ie not the perfect glossy white you see on most examples available today which have been repainted,leaving a shiny glossy pure white surface finish likely to wear away quickly completely unlike the original integral and hardwearing colored fibreglass gel coat. Salocchi was responsible for some of the highpoints in italian postwar design such as his highly sought after and beautiful, sculptural rotating bookcase ,also for Sormani, and his rare and stunning , avant garde form, light sculptures 'Tulpa' and 'Aloa'. One interesting feature is the method of height adjustment which consists of a screw which tightens into a groove in the sliding chromed steel rod. In order to prevent the seat from droping if the screw should loosen, the groove is cut deeper towards the bottom so that the application of weight causes a wedging effect against the screw. The height adjustment feature is important because unlike a chair the success of the Appoggio depends on its ability to match the length of a person's legs, the dimension of the human body which varies most from person to person. NOTE : the listed seating height is the lowest seating height. The seating height is fully adjustable between a minimum seating height of 27" (69cm) up to a maximum seating height of 34.5" (88cm ), The approximate total height (at highest extent) 54.75", height (at lowest extent) 46". The original, white gel coat, fibreglass finish still in extremely good order with a few light scuff marks to the leading edges, the black enamelled steel base has minor wear consistent with with age and use. A fine, completely original example.
