About the Item

This large and impressive piece of furniture was intended to travel as the center of a Gentleman's of means packing requirements. Made circa 1750-1760 under the reign of George II and used by landed gentry who did not travel light by setting themselves up on Campaign just as at home in country splendor. The chest has specific decorative details that show its Irish origins. The asymmetrical shell at the center of the stand for one and the short quirky ball and claw feet for another. Note the well-carved shells aspects and the punch work carving to give depth and detail to the background of the acanthus carved leaf work on the knees of the stand. The very large brass handles are lovely and the large brass lock plate are all original. Unusual are the two drawers designed and built into the bottom of the trunk as is the drawer in the Stand but these areas allow for commonly needed items to be set within easy reach yet still locked and safe. The amazing mahogany boards especially the front large board shows the size of old growth trees and attest to the value placed on the importation of such lumber in the 18th century by England. When not on travel these large pieces stood sentry in great halls and stair entries and can still to this day be found in great Irish and English country homes. For very similar examples see the comprehensive book “Irish Furniture” published in 2007 and written by The Knight of Glin and James Peill, pages 245 and 250.
